San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Álvaro Bautista will start from the back of the grid at the next race at the Sachsenring following his collision with Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo at the Iveco TT Assen.
Bautista had looked to have made a lightning start, yet went into the first corner too hot and slid his bike into Lorenzo’s Yamaha. Both subsequently ended up in the gravel and unable to re-join the race. Fortunately both riders were unhurt in the incident.
Yamaha immediately lodged a protest with Race Direction, which penalized Bautista by ruling that the San Carlo rider will start from last spot on the grid at the Sachsenring. An appeal was lodged by his team, but the FIM Stewards confirmed the decision of Race Direction, thus making it final. This is the second year in a row that Lorenzo has been taken out by another rider at the Dutch circuit.
