Kornfeil sets the pace after the rain

Jakub Kornfeil Moto3 Sepang 2013

Heavy rain just before the start of FP2 disrupted the first day of the Malaysian GP. On a drying track in the final stage of the practice Jakub Kornfeil was the first to come out on slicks. The Czech immediately set the fastest time. After the others came out on slicks as well he dropped back to 14th. Jasper Iwema was 28th fastest.

In the morning the track was dry and thus lap times were faster. Still the conditions in Sepang – hot and humid – made the top of the time sheets look different, with Masbou and Miller as 2nd and 3rd behind Viñales. Jakub Kornfeil used his time well to adjust the Kalex KTM to the conditions and was 15th fastest (2.16.446). Jasper Iwema set his fastest time of the morning in his final lap: 2.17.606, bringing him to 24th.

The wet track in the afternoon kept most riders in for a while before getting out on rain tires. Under the hot sun the track dried quickly and with 10 minutes on the clock Jakub Kornfeil was the first to try it on slicks and set the fastest time.

After watching the Czech the other riders decided to change to slicks as well and positions changed rapidly. In the final seconds of the session Kornfeil was pushed back to 14th, leaving him 15th in the combined results due to his lap time in FP1.

Jasper Iwema entered the top 10 as well and although he improved his pace every lap the Dutchman had to settle for 28th in the end. In the combined results he remained 24th.

Jakub Kornfeil: "It was nice to set the pace in FP2 when the track was drying, but my provisional pole position lasted too short. In Sepang you know there is always a chance of rain. Over lunch it was a short but torrential shower. In the wet conditions I feel confident. In the dry we have to improve more."

Jasper Iwema: "The humidity is of huge influence here. It is different to what we are used to, so we had to adapt. I am happy in the wet, but we need to work hard on the settings in dry but humid conditions. The results in qualifying tomorrow will depend a lot on the conditions."

Solid race for Jakub Kornfeil

Jakub Kornfeil Moto3 Indianpolis 2013

Jakub Kornfeil leaves the United States with renewed confidence for his home race next weekend. The Czech rider of RW Racing GP finished the Grand Prix of Indianapolis in 10th place after a solid race. His Dutch team mate Jasper Iwema was less fortunate. He was knocked off his bike in the exit of the first corner.

Jakub Kornfeil (10):
"I’m happy with this result. I had a good start, coming from 16th. My pace was good. With this pace I could have raced with the top 6. It’s a pity we botched up qualifying. But it certainly feels good to be back in the top 10. I’m looking forward to my home race next week. I’ve always had good results in Brno."

Jasper Iwema (DNF):
"I’m lucky I am unhurt. I couldn’t do anything about it. I don’t really know who T-boned me. It’s a pity because there were many DNF’s. Unfortunately I was the first… The only thing I might blame myself is having to start from 27th on the grid. That is a risk. We have to improve in practices."

Zero points for RW Racing GP at Catalunya

Jakub Kornfeil moto3 Catalunya 2013
Jasper Iwema and Jakub Kornfeil leave Barcelona with a DNF behind their names. After a bad qualification the Moto3 race of the Catalan GP turned out to be even more dramatic for RW Racing GP. Iwema crashed in the first lap already, Kornfeil entered the pits in the 12th lap after he damaged his bike in lap 4.

Jasper Iwema had a great start of the race from 26th. Halfway the opening lap he had moved up to 15th already. But in the stadium section of the Circuit de Catalunya Iwema collided with Niko Ajo and the two of them collected Toni Finsterbusch in their fall. None of them got injured, but it was impossible to continu the race.

Jakub Kornfeil was in front of Iwema when this happened. The Czech had a brilliant start as well, moving up from 17 to 9 in the first corner. Kornfeil made a few mistakes in the following laps, dropped back to 16, but was on the way to the front and fighting for 10th when Livio Loi crashed in front of him.

In Turn 5 of lap 5 Kornfeil had to move through the gravel to avoid Loi. Kornfeil came back on track as second last. In the gravel he damaged the tires and that made it difficult to control the bike. Chatter became so bad Kornfeil decided to pull in after 12 laps.

Jarno Janssen - Team manager
"It is a shame but there nothing we can do about it. We have to learn from our mistakes and look forward. The next race is one of the most important races of the season for us, as the Dutch TT is the teams and Jaspers home race. We have to get ourselves back together for that."

Ear infection keeps Kornfeil off bike

Jakub Kornfeil Moto3 Le Mans 2013
A suspected ear infection known as labyrinthitis kept Jakub Kornfeil off his Kalex KTM on the first day of the Italian GP at Mugello. Kornfeil tried four laps in the morning session but felt too sick and dizzy to continue. As a consequence RW Racing GP only had Jasper Iwema on track in the second free practice. He finished the session in 20th position.

Iwema had a difficult start of the day in damp and tricky conditions but recovered well in the afternoon. The sun had warmed up the Tuscany hills and dried the track. In almost perfect conditions Iwema was in 13th halfway through the session. His lap time of 2.01.803 was little over 2 seconds slower than the fastest time of provisional pole sitter Luis Salom.

Team manager Jarno Janssen was satisfied with the results of this afternoon, but knows there is still much work to be done. ,,Jasper has to keep pushing as hard as he can, but we should not forget he is still not 100 percent recovered from the concussion he sustained in Texas. His riding is still affected by that. But we know what to do, where we have to concentrate on.’’

Janssen expressed his concerns on Jakub Kornfeil. The Czech came to Mugello yesterday morning complaining he felt sick and dizzy for a few days already. Tests in the Czech Republic showed nothing and he underwent new examinations in the Clinica Mobile at the circuit, where the doctors suspect an ear infection known as labyrinthitis: an inflammation in the inner ear that affects the hearing and balance.

Kornfeil got medication and was allowed to try to ride, but after four laps already it was clear he was not able to ride.

The current number 7 in the Moto3 championship will have another examination tomorrow to see if he is fit. If not, Kornfeil will fly back to the Czech Republic as soon as possible to receive treatment.

Janssen is worried about his rider. ,,If it is labyrinthitis, as they suspect, Jakub may be out for a few weeks. That would be very bad news, for Jakub in the first place, but for the team as well.’’

Jasper Iwema (20):
"The second practice was allright. I am fast in the first two sections of the circuit, but I lose almost a full second in the third section that contains two fast corners (Arabiata 1 and 2) and a chicane. Together with my team I am working to find a way to improve there. This morning was not good. It was tricky and I didn’t want to take risks, but I was a bit too cautious."

Jakub Kornfeil:
"I am very disappointed. The start of the season has been good and I’m 7th in the championship. I want to race, but I can’t. I hope the medication helps."

Jakub Kornfeil and Jasper Iwema get the maximum out of French GP

Jakub Kornfeil Le Mans Moto3 2013

One side of the RW Racing GP garage was happy after the Moto3 race of the French GP. The other side was a bit disappointed. Jakub Kornfeil was obviously the happy one after finishing 6th and picking up 10 points for the world championship. Jasper Iwema was the disappointed one after finishing 21st and leaving Le Mans without points. But knowing where they came from, both riders knew they got the maximum out of it.

Jakub Kornfeil got of the starting grid like a rocket. The Czech was able to stick to the strategy he made up together with team manager Jarno Janssen: take the outside line in the first corner to be in the perfect position for the inside line in the first chicane. Coming through the chicane proved to be crucial. Kornfeil moved up from 14th to 10th, passed another one and ended the first lap in 9th position.

In lap 5 he was already in 6th position and closing in on Alex Marquez in 5th. Unfortunately the leading group with Folger, Rins, Viñales and Salom was already too far away to fight for the podium. Kornfeil could hold on his position and decided to back off in the final part of the race to save his tires and 10 valuable world championship points.

Having to start the Moto3 race from 30th position on the grid it didn’t seem to be the weekend of Jasper Iwema. Expectations were high after Iwema finished 7th in Le Mans last year and 14th in Jerez two weeks ago. But Iwema couldn’t find his rhythm on Friday, lost confidence and struggled all weekend as a consequence of that.

Finishing the race in 21st was the best he could do. After a good start (from 30 to 22nd) Iwema tried to hold on to a big group fighting for the last few championship points but he got into trouble after touching wet spots on the track several times. The race was declared dry, but the track wasn’t dry. There was only a narrow dry line and in the big group Iwema was in, it was impossible to stay on the dry line. Nevertheless Iwema managed to stay on the bike where others crashed off and make the most out of a bad weekend.

Jakub Kornfeil (6):
"My Kalex KTM was at 100 percent and I could keep on pushing right from the start. I am really happy with the bike. I was able to choose the outside line in the first corner and get through the chicane on the inside, making it impossible for others to overtake me there. It worked out very well and I could close in on Marquez. But just when I thought I could pass him, I made a small mistake. That cost me the connection to Marquez. Fighting my way to Marquez had cost me the best of the tires and it got pretty slippery, so I decided to settle for 6th and not take any more risks. I think finishing 6th after starting from 14th is the maximum I could do. I am very happy with these 10 points."

Jasper Iwema (21):
"It wasn’t my weekend but let’s not make a drama from one bad weekend. There were no big problems with the bikes, it was just me. I have been abreast of things from the beginning and never caught up. When you don’t have maximum confidence, it is impossible to push to the limit. Having to start from 30th was the biggest disappointment. That is not where I should be. I knew it was going to be a difficult race, no matter what the weather would do. The start was not bad: I gained many positions in the first part of the first lap. But the dry line was narrow and I got off track twice halfway of the race, giving others the opportunity to overtake. In the end 21st after starting from the back of the grid isn’t too bad, but it is far from what the team and myself had expected and therefore I’m really disappointed. Better to forget about this weekend quickly and move on to Mugello."

Iwema back on track while Kornfeil is having exams

Jasper Imewa Jerez Moto3 2013

RW Racing GP started the GP of Spain with just one rider. While Jakub Kornfeil was having compulsory state exams in mathematics back in the Czech Republic, Dutchman Jasper Iwema was back on track in Jerez after his giant crash in Austin. Despite a small crash at the end of the second free practice Iwema was doing well. He ended the session in 19th position, with a lap time of 1.49.472.

Like most of the teams RW Racing GP was bothered by a power cut that hit the circuit of Jerez during the first Moto2 practice and continued in the afternoon. The team had to use the battery for tire warmers as power supply and had to work in the dark. Because of the power cut the practice for the Red Bull Rookies Cup was postponed to the end of the afternoon.

With only the big tv screen for the main grand stands working it was difficult for the team to follow what Jasper Iwema was doing on track. In the morning session (11th) Iwema did good. He was able to ride for the whole session, 16 laps. After the practice the headache returned.

In the afternoon, with temperatures rising, it was a bit more difficult, but Iwema could improve his lap time while four riders (Salom, Ajo, Antonelli and McPhee) could not. In the last outing Iwema lost the front in the final corner, but was able to pick up his Kalex KTM and ride back to pitlane himself.

Kornfeil will return on track tomorrow for the final free practice and qualifying. Skipping the exams was no option and the free practices for a Moto3 GP where no reason for a respite.

Jasper Iwema (19):
"Only after the effort the headache and the dizziness return. I have to take extra rest and lay down for a while after the practices. While riding I didn’t experience any trouble. I just have to be a bit more careful. Concerning that this result is satisfying for now."

Jasper Iwema OK After Big Highsider

Jasper Imewa Austin Moto3 Crash

Jasper Iwema is ok after a heavy and nasty crash. RW Racing GP’s rider lost the front in the exit of Turn 17 and was thrown off his bike at 160 km/h. He landed on his head and was unconscious for 2 minutes. Doctors decided therefore to take him to a hospital for an extra check and a CT-scan of his head. According to RW’s team manager Jarno Janssen Iwema was ok and has nothing broken.

Jasper Iwema had a good start in the Moto3 race at the circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Overnight changes on the bike seemed to be working well and the Dutchman gained a lot of confidence in the warming up. Thanks to this he was able to gain positions in the first few laps of the race.

In lap 3 he was almost caught in the crash of Tonucci which cost him the positions he had gained. He came back on track in 24th but fought himself back to 18th.

‘Then we saw a red flag and immediately after we saw Jasper lying there knock out,’ team manager Jarno Janssen explains. ‘He was unconscious for 2 minutes. To be sure the doctors stabilized his neck and didn’t take off his helmet, but we could see him moving his arms and legs.’

In the medical center at the circuit doctors found no serious injuries but decided to send Iwema to a hospital anyway for an extra examination and a CT-scan of the head. ‘Jasper refused to go to hospital, because he was feeling fine,’ according to Janssen. ‘But the doctors insisted.’

Iwema’s team mate Jakub Kornfeil meanwhile had a good start as well and was on his way to 7th position when the race was red flagged because of the crash. Kornfeil restarted the five remaining laps of the race in 9th, but didn’t have a very good start. He dropped back to 12th but fought his way back to finish in 10th.

Jakub Kornfeil (10):
"I’m happy with my first championship points of this season, but I realize I could have won more. I just needed some time to get the adrenaline and the aggression back. In a normal race you have the time for that, but not in a five lap sprint race."

RW Racing GP not satisfied with qualifying

Jakub Kornfeil Moto3 Austin 2013

Jakub Kornfeil will start the GP of the Americas from 13th position, Jasper Iwema from 19th. RW Racing GP is not satisfied with that result. 'It could have been better', team manager Jarno Janssen says. 'That is why I am not

satisfied: they didn't get the best out of the qualifying session. They should have been on 7th and 15th, like they were in the morning practice.'

The gap with the front row was too big, but the differences behind were a lot smaller. If Iwema, for example, would have been half a second quicker he could have been in the top 10. According to Janssen it was possible to find that half a second.

'Both Jakub and Jasper were waiting too long. That took too much time. Jakub wanted to change too much on the bike, while he could have been in 7th or 8th if he had used the time he had. Jasper was waiting for a slipstream which brought him into troubles. A 40 minutes session isn't that long.'

Turn 1 of the new circuit in Austin, Texas is a very tight corner. Janssen is afraid his riders are too far back and might get into troubles because of the traffic in this turn. 'Everybody wants to be there first. It's easier when you are just a bit further up front. Hopefully they will both have a good start of the race and gain a few positions.'

Jakub Kornfeil 13th
"I wanted the bike to be better and that took time. Even after the qualifying session I kept on working on the bike with my mechanics to improve for the race. In the race it has to be perfect: that's when the prices are given. Not in qualifying."

Jasper Iwema 19th
"To be honest 19th is fine with me. I'm satisfied with that result. Maybe it could have been better, but it could have been worse as well. I'll have to make up in the race and that is okay."

No grip in Texas for RW Racing Riders

Jakub Kornfeil Losail 2013

The new track in Austin, Texas, gave RW Racing GP riders Jakub Kornfeil and Jasper Iwema difficulties. In the first free practice for Moto3 there was no grip at all, leaving them in 17th (Iwema) and 18th (Kornfeil). In the afternoon session the track was a little bit better, thanks to the practice sessions of the other classes. Kornfeil was over 4 seconds quicker and ended up in 11th. Iwema finished in 22nd position.

The differences between the top riders and the rest of the pack were big. Kornfeil, in 11th, lost 2,6 seconds compared to the fastest man, Maverick Viñales. Iwema was 3,6 seconds behind. According to team manager Jarno Janssen the lack of grip was the cause of these gaps. ,,Tomorrow the differences will probably get smaller, although everybody will be faster.''

Scott Deroue set the second fastest time in the free practices for the Red Bull Rookies Cup.

Jakub Kornfeil (11):
"It's a nice track: technical and difficult. We have tried to get to know the track the last few days on the scooter and by foot, but it is always different when you are on the Moto3 bike. It's a typical Formula 1 track, which is not easy for the bikes. But we'll get used to it and learn it quick enough to aim for a good result in qualifying tomorrow."

Jasper Iwema (22):
"It is a new track for all of us, but I obviously had some more problems with the lack of grip. No grip means no feeling with the bike. I didn't feel very confident, which is absolutely necessary on this technical track. But it can only get better."

First points for Iwema with RW Racing GP

Jasper Imewa Losail 2013

Jasper Iwema grabbed up his first 3 points of the 2013 season in the opening race in Qatar. Under the floodlights of the Losail Circuit the Dutch rider for RW Racing GP finished 13th in a hard fought battle. His team mate Jakub Kornfeil was less happy. Hampered by electronic problems the Czech dropped back from 10th position to 22 in the last two laps of the race.

The first Moto3 race of the season had two faces for RW Racing GP, with a happy Jasper Iwema and a disappointed Jakub Kornfeil.

Kornfeil lost a few places at the start and dropped back to 10. He was dueling with Niklas Ajo for place 9 when, in lap 10, he ran wide in Turn 13. The Czech came back on track in 13th place and fought his way back to 10 in lap 14. But in lap 17, the penultimate lap, his bike started to slow down.

Kornfeil dropped back to 17th, fought himself to 14th – just behind his team mate Iwema – but dropped back to 22nd in the final lap, leaving him empty handed and frustrated.

Iwema on the other hand had a good race. Iwema was in the medical center until half an hour before the race due to food poisoning. Nevertheless he won a few places at the start and entered the first corner in 15th position. Alexis Masbou cut off the connection with Danny Webb, leaving Iwema fighting for 14th position. In a hard fought battle with John McPhee, Jack Miller, Romano Fenati and Masbou, Iwema came out the strongest. After his team mate Kornfeil fell back Iwema moved up to 13th and was able to hold off the others in an intense last lap fight.

Jasper Iwema (13):
"I ate something wrong yesterday night and was very sick this morning. I went to the Clinica Mobile and they gave me salted water and ice to cool down the fever. I had a good start but I had to find my rhythm in the first two laps. When the adrenaline came in, Masbou was in my way and I lost the connection to the group in front of me. It was a hard battle and I am really happy I could stay in front. It feels so good to be back in the fight for points."

Jakub Kornfeil (22):
"There is not much to say. I am very disappointed and frustrated. I was fighting so hard for top 10 and then this electronic problem came up all of a sudden. There was nothing I could do."

Last Lap Crash Holds Jakub Kornfeil Back

Jakub Kornfeil Losail Moto3 2013

A crash in his final lap has prevented Jakub Kornfeil to be further up the front of the startgrid for tomorrow’s GP of Qatar. In the last lap of the qualifying practice the Czech came into turn 2 a bit too hot and ended up in the gravel bed. The crash left him in 7th spot in the classification. His RW Racing GP team mate Jasper Iwema will start the Moto3 race from 18th.

Team manager Jarno Janssen was satisfied with the results of his riders. ,,They both are where we expected them based on preseason results. But looking at the last few days I think they both could have done better.’’
In the case of Kornfeil it was due to the crash. Otherwise he could have been on the second row, according to Janssen.  In Iwema’s case it was a matter of using the available time better and more efficiënt. ,,He started pushing too late. He could have been a row further up.’’

The team used the warm up training as an extra free practice. For Iwema to ride a few long stints and for Kornfeil to get back into the rhythm after his crash.

Jakub Kornfeil (7):
"I’m happy with the classification but I do realize it could have been better if I hadn’t crashed. It was in turn 2: the first left hander. I think the tire had lost temperature and I went in a bit too hot. I’m okay, but for my result it was a pity. Tomorrow I will try to fight for a top 5 finish."

Jasper Iwema (18):
"I don’t know why it took me so long to really start to pace up. Maybe I had to get used to it again: it’s been a while since I had my last real qualifying practice. It’s different than in a free practice or a preseason training. But in the end the result is good enough. For now, because I know now I can go faster. At least I will be able to fight for points."

Difficult Practice for RW Racing Due to Hard Wind

Jakub Kornfeil Losail 2013

A nasty wind that tortured the Losail Circuit made the second day of the GP of Qatar difficult. The circumstances in the desert were too tricky. RW Racing GP’s riders Jakub Kornfeil and Jasper Iwema avoided to take too many risks. Therefore both riders ended up outside the top 10: Kornfeil in 13th with 2.10.300, Iwema in 19th with 2.10.920.

Both Kornfeil and Iwema showed the capability to ride in the top 10 on several occasions during FP3. But when it came down to setting a fast lap, in the last 10 minutes of the session, the wind became stronger and it even started to rain lightly. They decided to take not too many risks and avoided to ride on the very limit to set a time.
Team manager Jarno Janssen agreed with his riders: "There is no point in riding on the limit under these conditions. I rather have two bikes and two riders in one piece in the garage. It was a free practice; when the conditions are like this in tomorrow’s qualifying practice they will have to ride on the limit, but not now."

Jakub Kornfeil (13):
"I am not happy. I wanted to ride: as much as possible and as fast as possible. But it wasn’t possible. Some riders had enough confidence to ride it to the limit and set a fast lap time. That’s their risk. I didn’t feel like taking so many risk. I will if I have to, in qualifying."

Jasper Iwema (19):
"I was in the top 10 a few times and I was confident I could do even better. But then the wind became more like a storm and we were almost blown off the bike. We only had one session today and that was blown away. Let’s just hope the rest of the weekend will be better, because I’m eager to perform."

Promising start for Kornfeil and Iwema

Jakub Kornfeil Losail MOto3 2013

RW Racing GP experienced a good start of the 2013 season. In the first free practice for the Moto3 riders on the Losail circuit in Qatar Jasper Iwema set a promising 9th time. His team mate Jakub Kornfeil was on his tail and finished 11th. The Czech improved to 10th in the second practice session. The Dutchman had to settle for 20th after a small mistake in his flying lap.

In the first practice many riders had difficulties to stay on track due to the lack of grip on the dusty track in the desert. During the session the racing line got cleaner and laptimes improved. Iwema and Kornfeil were in or around the top 10 for most of the session.

The second free practice was obviously different. The track was cleaned up after the free practices for Moto2 and MotoGP and the pace went up dramatically. Kornfeil managed to go over 2 seconds faster than in the first session. Halfway during the practice the Czech went up into 5th but he could hold on to that position. Even though he set his fastest time in his last lap he dropped back to 10th. Would Kornfeil had been able to ride his ideal lap (the sum of the best partial times of each of the four sections of the circuit) it would have put him on the provisional 4th place.

Iwema was struggling a bit more to improve his lap times and found his name back in 20th position in the end. He improved his time from the first session by more than half a second but could have been much faster had he not made a slight mistake in his final lap.
Former RW Racing GP rider Luis Salom set the fastest time: 2.07.341. Only Jonas Folger managed to stay close to him.

Jakub Kornfeil (10):
"I’m happy with these first results. I was riding on my own for most of the session while being in the right group can make a big difference here. We know where we can improve and we know we have to, to stay close to the top 5."

Jasper Iwema (20):
"The first session was great. I am really happy with 9th. I was going in the right direction in the second practice as well, when I made a mistake. In my flying lap I missed a gear in the third section of the circuit. That cost me a few tenths at least. It’s a pity and I’m disappointed, but I know I can ride faster."

Team manager Jarno Janssen:
"I’m satisfied. It’s only the first day and there is still a lot to improve. Both riders did a good job and are close to the group where they belong. In this track it is important to stay in the right group, with the right pace. But obviously everybody is still trying to find their place in the field. The gaps are really small. Kornfeil is only 3 tenths of a second off number 4"

Jakub Kornfeil signs for RW Racing GP

Jakub Kornfeil RW Racing 2013

RW Racing GP is proud to announce it has signed Jakub Kornfeil as its new rider for 2013. In the Dutch based team Kornfeil will succeed Luis Salom, who will move to Red Bull KTM Ajo factory team.

Kornfeil is currently 15th in the Moto3 world championship on a FTR Honda. Five times this season he finished in the top 10, with sixth place as his best result so far on his hometrack Brno. The 19 year old Czech, the Red Bull Rookies champion of three years ago, made his debut in Grand Prix in 2009 (San Marino). In total he has 51 races under his belt in 125cc and Moto3.

Jakub Kornfeil:
"Obviously I’m very happy to have signed with my new team. RW Racing GP has shown it is a competitive team with a competitive bike. I’m really looking forward to working with this team."

Team manager Johan Stigefelt:
"We have been watching Jakub closely for a while allready. He has shown a lot of potential and we strongly believe is a new boost for the team. We continue to work with Kalex KTM and we hope this collaboration will bring us the results we are having this year.
We still have four races to go and Luis Salom still has the world title within reach. That remains our goal for the near future. We are sorry to see Luis go, but we wish him all the best with his new team."
