Hernandez Scores Points As PBM Riders Deliver In Qatar

Yonny Hernandez Losail MotoGP 2013

The PBM MotoGP team of Yonny Hernandez and Michael Laverty were in action at the opening round of the MotoGP World Championship in Qatar this weekend where both riders put in an impressive performance for the Penrith-based team.

Both riders were contesting the Claiming Rules Teams (CRT) class where Hernandez, in only his second season in MotoGP was aboard the team's updated-specification Minxflix.com Aprilia ART and Laverty rode the revolutionary brand new PBM-chassised Minxflix.com Aprilia at his debut event.

24-year-old Colombian Hernandez, from Medelln, overcame a couple of crashes during practice to compete against the other CRT entries and in FP2, was 14th overall and second CRT bike. As the weekend progressed, Yonny ended up sixth in the new-look qualifying format to place himself in a handy 16th on the grid for the opening race of the season.

Meanwhile 31-year-old Laverty, from Toome in Northern Ireland was tasked with developing the unique machine as well as initiating himself into the series and he acquitted himself magnificently throughout the weekend. Gradually bringing himself and the machine up to speed, he posted 14th fastest time during qualifying to slot into 24th space on the grid as his lap times tumbled.

Into the only night-time race of the season and both riders didn't make the best of starts with Hernandez running in a points-scoring 15th place in the early stages as Laverty climbed inside the top 20. By half race distance, Hernandez was challenging for 14th with Laverty also looking to improve on his top 20 place and although Yonny was briefly up to 13th place, he had to settle for 14th at the flag, just missing out on third placed in the CRT class by a second.

Laverty gamely battled on and steadily improved his position, climbing to 17th overall and seventh CRT machine on lap 16 where he held off Lukas Pesek to claim his first MotoGP finish. It was testimony to his and the PBM team's spirit and resolve that he remained on the same lap as eventual winner Jorge Lorenzo after 22 laps of the Doha, Losail track.

Michael Laverty:
"It is great to get the first round under our belts and to bring the bike home safely. It's not the position we wanted but we have to keep reminding ourselves that Rome wasn't built in a day. We are making good progress with the PBM bike and all things considered we are not that far away from the top CRTs at this stage. I believe we can take a good step forward in Austin for round two."

Yonny Hernandez:
"I did not have a good start and lost some positions but was able to recover them before the end of the first lap. The bike set-up felt good, so I was able to push hard and I had a nice fight with Hector Barbera in the race. I am happy with the result and scoring two points for the team and championship is great. With more time on the bike and set up work for the latter part of the race, I am confident of improving further."

Phil Borley, Technical Director:
"We are pleased with the results as both of our riders rode their bikes at a high level. Yonny did not have the best of starts but soon got into a strong rhythm and achieved a points scoring result. Michael's race was affected by the lack of time we have had setting up the new PBM bike but his race lap times were consistent and we are more than happy to have finished our first race at a respectable pace. With the benefit of the race data for both of our riders, we now look forward to the Texas race."

Brilliant Rapport for Michael Laverty and Yonny Hernandez at Sepang

Michael Laverty Sepang MotoGP Test 2013

Paul Bird Motorsport concluded the official three-day MotoGP test at Sepang with a very positive result. Michael Laverty set 2:03.874 on his best lap and put him on the 2nd best CRT's behind Aleix Espargaro. Yonny Hernandez with the unfit condition set 2:05.407 on the 25th position on the last day of testing session.

Paul Bird as the team owner told that he was delighted with the his team performance. Paul Bird admitted that he was surprised by Michael Laverty performance.

Paul Bird, Team Owner
"We have had a very successful test and I'm delighted with how everything has gone. I have been speaking to Phil and the riders on a daily basis and we have built up a brilliant rapport already. I shouldn't be, because we have worked with him for three years previously and know how talented he is, but I'm surprised at just how well Michael has gone given his lack of experience with the bike, brakes and tyres at a track he's never seen before. Yonny continues to impress us all despite his shoulder still not being 100%, he's very much helping the team which is great and he'll be fully fit by the start of the season. The new bikes are nearly ready so we'll have them at the next test and hopefully we can continue this great start. I'm more than happy, especially as we now have silenced a few of our doubters!"

Yonny Hernandez and Michael Laverty on PBM Bikes 2013

Yonny Hernandez Sepang 2012

Paul Bird Motorsport has announced the official line up for 2013 with Yonny Hernandez and Michael Laverty on the Aprilia bikes. Yonny Hernandez will use ART bike, while Michael Laverty on brand new RSV4-powered 'PBM machine'.

Yonny Hernandez:
"I am really looking forward to next season and especially the first test when I can ride my ART bikes and start work with Paul Bird and the PBM UK team. I have high expectations for the season with my goal to finish the highest placed CRT rider in the championship."

Michael Laverty:
"I'm really excited about racing in the 2013 MotoGP series; I'd like to thank Paul and the guys at PBM UK for giving me this opportunity. I will be riding an Aprilia powered PBM machine with the new chassis and control electronics, I can't wait to get started pre-season testing at Sepang in early February. I will have to adapt to the Bridgestone tyres and carbon brakes plus learn a few new circuits along the way but I hope to be challenging for top CRT honours. There are some experienced riders on CRT bikes so I am certainly not underestimating the challenge. It's great to be back with the PBM team, having spent three years there I should easily slot back in, next season makes PBM the team I've spent the longest with so far in my career. It is going to be an interesting season with a lot to learn but I'm really up for the challenge."

Paul Bird, Team Owner:
"We have now finalised all the details of the contracts and I'm delighted to announce that both Yonny and Michael will be riding in MotoGP for us next season. We learned a lot this season and we plan on building on that experience as we want to challenge for top CRT honours and I see no reason why we can't. It's certainly going to be a very busy year for us, that's for sure!"

Michael Laverty Maybe on PBM CRT 2013

Michael Laverty for PBM CRT 2013
After Shane 'Shakey' Byrne decided not to accept the PBM's offer to race at MotoGP next session, Paul Bird now looking for a new rider. Michael Laverty told to belfasttelegraph that he got an offer to ride ART on the 2013 season with PBM. The British Superbike rider also got offers from Honda and Yamaha on the BSB 2013 season.

Paul Bird also propose for two rider for next session. Yonny Hernandez is the other candidate to fill the bike for the 2013 season.

Michael Lavery:
“I’ve got on really well with both Honda and Yamaha teams these past two season, but the lure of World championship and racing against Edwards and De Puniet in CRT is appealing. I know it’s the second tier championship in MotoGP, and it’s even harder to know what is the best decision to make, as the Yamaha deal with Shaun is right on the wire and he can’t hold on much longer.”

Shane Byrne Return to MotoGP?

Shane Byrne MotoGP Return

There is a speculation about Shane Byrne MotoGP return on this year. Paul Bird told to British Eurosport that Shane maybe replace James Ellison on Le Mans GP. James Ellison didn't get points on 3 races and only finished 1 time on Qatar GP.

So why Shane? Shane Byrne now is on British Superbike with Paul Bird Motorsport, riding the Kawasaki ZX-10R. Shane also on MotoGP before, 11 starts on 2005 season with Honda, and 9 times on 2004 with Aprilia.

Paul Bird said, "It's something I have been milling over for a couple of meetings. James seems to be lacking a bit of confidence and is complaining about massive chatter with the bike. Obviously Shakey has ridden at Le Mans a couple of times and maybe we will let him have a run out on the bike and rest James for a meeting."

He continue, "That way we can have another view of what the bike is like, to see if we do have a severe chatter problem, but, you known, Casey Stoner has severe chatter problems and still wins the race, so we will have a look. I've asked James if he wants to run at Le Mans but I think we would get another view of what the bike is like. It's our first [MotoGP] season so maybe it's time for a management decision."

Ellison Expect A Good Result on Estoril

James Ellison Jerez 2012

James Ellision from Paul Bird Motorsport CRT Team told that he's very happy with the improvement of the biike after Jerez race last Sunday. The chatter issue was reduce, and he also feel comfortable running among the CRT riders.

Ellison told, “I'm very happy with the improvements to the bike, we have gone a long way to sorting the chatter issues by trying a combination of the new front tyre and turning off the traction control but we lost side grip, which we will sort by running traction control at Estoril. We had a couple of problems during practice but I got a great start in the race and was feeling comfortable running with the leading CRT riders, we were even mixing it up with a few prototypes as well, but then the oil pressure suddenly dropped and I had to pit.

He continue, “I am gutted as we deserved our first points and I feel for the team. We have made good strides this weekend but still need more time on the bike to iron out the problems, especially with the electronics, but today has given us all encouragement and we can hopefully get a good result in Estoril.”
