Surprise Crash Catches Out Antonelli at Le Mans

Niccolo Antonelli Le Mans 2012

Team San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Niccolò Antonelli was dealt a bad hand in this afternoon's qualifying gamble at Le Mans, where rain showers made for unpredictable conditions that led to a crash for the Italian youngster. Niccolò will start the race from way down the grid in 27th place, with local weather forecasters predicting more rain tomorrow.

Antonelli said, "I still don't know what happened with the crash! I was trying to get comfortable with the bike and hadn't even started to push but as I opened the throttle it threw me over the bars. I was improving my pace but still wasn't completely comfortable and I think without the crash I'd have gradually improved further lap after lap."

He continue, "Unfortunately there wasn't enough time left for us to get back out there so it's a shame. It looks like the weather could be a major factor again tomorrow so anything could happen but I'd prefer not to make predictions.”
