Scott Redding passed fit to ride at Motegi

Scott Redding Moto2 Mtoegi 2013

Scott Redding has been deemed fit to ride in this weekend’s penultimate Moto2 race at Motegi, after passing a medical at the circuit this afternoon.

The 20-year-old Briton fractured the radius in his left arm in a qualifying crash at Phillip Island, but underwent surgery at the Epworth Hospital in Melbourne on the Saturday evening, with a plate and six screws being inserted to repair the damage.

After four days of rehabilitation therapy under the direction of Clinica Mobile staff, Redding declared himself ready to race this weekend in Japan.

The final hurdle to his return, an assessment by circuit medical staff, proved no problem for Redding and he will return to the track for Friday’s opening free practice session just six days after his Phillip Island qualifying crash.

Redding will undergo a further assessment by circuit medical staff after FP2 on Friday, which he will also need to pass if he is to participate for the remainder of the weekend.

After missing the race in Australia due to the injury, Redding currently trails Pol Espargaro by 16 points in the championship standings. While reversing the situation this weekend may not be possible, ensuring the title battle goes down to the wire in Valencia is Redding’s ultimate goal.

Scott Redding
“There was no way I was going home after Australia, not when there was even an outside chance I could ride in Japan. Even after the surgery on Sunday morning I knew I was going to Japan to try and ride. The surgery was a success, Dr. Andrew Oppy and his staff did a great job, and the recovery has been exactly as expected. From Sunday morning onwards I’ve been working to restore the movement and strength in my left hand and, as the medical staff here at Motegi have now confirmed, I’m fit to ride. I have to undergo another assessment after the two free practice sessions tomorrow, but I’ll know straight away whether it’s possible to race. If I’m fit to race then the goal has to be to ensure the championship battle goes down to the final round in Valencia, for which I’ll have had more recovery time.”

Pramac Racing Team Preview MotoGP Motegi

Andrea Iannone MotoGP Phillip Island 2013

The build-up to the Japanese Grand Prix weekend is currently characterized by a Typhoon warning. After having already been a victim of such an event only a few days ago, Japan is preparing to face the threat of Typhoon Francisco which, although currently category 2, remains quite energetic and dangerous, and over the next few days could hit the Japanese archipelago, reaching the area of Motegi as well with winds up to 45 knots and gusts of 55-60 knots. This would also mean not being able to use all the temporary structures set up in the paddock at the Twin Ring Motegi, which should obviously be removed in time, in order to avoid more damage and further risks. While waiting to receive further news, MotoGP and its protagonists are preparing to compete in the final leg of the overseas tripleheader and also the penultimate round of this year’s MotoGP World Championship.

The track is located in the Kanto district and surrounded by forests within which the river Nakagawa flows, and it is named Twin Ring Motegi because it consists of two different circuits, a long 2.493 km oval (1.548 miles) and a of 4.801 km road track (2.983 miles) that with its long straights and tight corners, has hosted the World Championship since 1999. The structure also includes a safe riding school, dirt track and go karts, hotel, restaurants, shops and spaces for events.

Yonny Hernandez is now ready for a new adventure aboard the DesmosediciGP13 with which he will face the Japanese track for the first time on a MotoGP bike. Hoping that the slight fracture to his right hand won’t slow him down too much, the Ignite Pramac Racing Team rider is determined to immediately put into practice what he has learnt so far and to increase confidence with his bike.

Andrea Iannone has a special feeling with this circuit as in 2009, his last year in the 125 class, he stepped onto the top of the podium, an experience that he repeated two years later aboard a Moto2. This year instead he will ride his DesmosediciGP13 for the first time and he is ready to get the best possible results with the Energy TI Pramac Racing Team, after the constant progress made and the results obtained in particular in the last part of the season.

Yonny Hernandez - Ignite Pramac Racing Team
“Unfortunately at Phillip Island I injured my hand, but I have already been to the Clinica Mobile, and they told me that it is improving. Tomorrow I'll have some injections anyway but it's going well. These days I’ve heard a lot of people speaking about the typhoon, I don’t know if it’s true or not but, I think it’s most likely we will have the chance to try the bike in the rain, and I hope it goes better than last week. I like this circuit, it is very fast and I would like to do a good race.”

Andrea Iannone – Energy T.I. Pramac Racing Team
“These days there’s a lot of talk about the weather, but I really have no idea so I can’t say. What I do know, is that here we would like to start from where we left off in Australia, to continue and improve what has been done. I'd like to get a good weekend’s start and maybe have another good race like the one on Sunday. And if it rains or not we’ll face it, because we'll all be in the same situation. I continue to be positive and I hope, if I had to sum things up now, to have less injuries next year. In any case, it’s okay, now I want to concentrate on the demanding weekend that awaits us, and then we’ll have a little rest before Valencia.”

Yamaha Factory Racing Preview MotoGP Motegi

Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Phillip Island 2013

Yamaha Factory Racing has arrived in Japan for the final overseas race of the 2013 MotoGP World Championship at the Twin Ring Motegi Circuit.

Riders Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi both spent today engaged in special but different activities.

Defending world champion Lorenzo joined the Spanish MotoGP riders in attending the Spanish Embassy in Tokyo. The riders gathered to celebrate the fourth centenary of the Keicho Embassy, the first Japanese diplomatic mission to Spain. Hasekura Tsunenaga crossed the Pacific Ocean in 1613, becoming the first Japanese ambassador in Europe and marking the beginning of 400 years of Spanish-Japanese relations.

Rossi took the opportunity of being in Yamaha’s home country to spend this afternoon reunited with an old friend at Yamaha’s headquarters in Iwata. He took part in a live talk show with Masao Furusawa in front of 400 guests at Communications Plaza, Yamaha’s corporate museum.

The riders will now move to Motegi to prepare for the final of the overseas triple-header at Twin Ring Motegi this weekend. After the dramatic results of last weekend’s Phillip Island race left Lorenzo trailing the championship lead by 18 points, the defending champion will be going all out for victory this Sunday.

The 4.8km circuit has been home to the Japanese Grand Prix since the year 2000 and always produces dramatic racing. The six left and eight right corners feature some of the hardest braking zones of the calendar, requiring excellent bike set up.

One of the stars of the final round of the 2012 MotoGP Championship, Yamaha development rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga will be making a wildcard appearance at the Japanese Grand Prix on a YZR-M1 as part of Yamaha's development squad. Nakasuga made history by finishing second in the Valencia Grand Prix last year. He is a three-time All-Japan Road Race Champion, winning in 2008,2009 and 2012 and is currently sitting in third position in the national championship.

Jorge Lorenzo
“It was a breath of fresh air to achieve such a great victory in Australia, but with two races still remaining it is difficult to say what’s going on. Now we concentrate on Japan, the last race of this exciting and hard triple of grand prix. We have cut a bit off the distance to our main rival so I cannot wait for the next race at Motegi. I always look forward to riding at the Twin Ring. Japan is a lovely country where I feel pretty comfortable and I can feel a huge support from the fans. Motegi is also a special track for me. I won there in 2009, just my second victory in the MotoGP category. I have a lot of good memories from this circuit and I hope we can be more competitive than in the recent years. Motegi is a different track in terms of riding. It is one of the few circuits denominated a ‘stop and go’ track so it is important to have a good braking and also a great acceleration. In this subject we improved a lot compared to last year and even more with the new seamless gearbox so hopefully we will be stronger than in 2012. We have nothing to lose so we can risk a bit more than last year.”

Valentino Rossi
“Motegi is a place I like a lot, it is a very good track. We will see our potential on Friday morning and of course we will give 100% to do a good performance. I was also very happy to come back to Yamaha's headquarters in Iwata and to see many "old" friends. The support is always fantastic so it is a real pleasure to be here again.”

Casey Stoner to test for HRC

Casey Stoner MotoGP Phillip Island 2012

Casey Stoner will climb back on a Honda RC213V, for the first time since Valencia 2012, as a test rider for Honda Racing Corporation. The two-time World Champion left the sport at the end of last year and has been linked with rumours of a wild card appearance this season but this is now out of the question.

The Australian rider will do four tests in Motegi in the next few months with Honda Racing's R&D team, working on the evolution of the RC213V and also on the new production racer bike that Honda Racing will sell to selected team next year to race in MotoGP.

Casey Stoner
"It's been almost 7 months now since Valencia and I'm still happy and comfortable with the decision I made to stop racing. Sometimes I miss riding my RCV, so I am happy that HRC asked me to do some tests in Motegi this year. This will allow me to enjoy what I miss: riding a MotoGP bike! I'm looking forward to getting on the bike and see how it has changed from last year and I'd like to thank Honda for this opportunity"

Shuhei Nakamoto - HRC Executive Vice President
"We are very pleased to have Casey back on a Honda! He knows this machine very well and I'm sure he can help our engineers and technicians with the development of the RC213V. Bridgestone Motegi Race Review

Dani Pedrosa Motegi 2012
Tyre choice for the race was the same for every rider with the combination of the harder front and softer asymmetric rear slick best suiting the numerous acceleration and braking zones at Motegi. Weather conditions today were dry yet slightly cooler than yesterday due to some cloud cover in the afternoon with a peak track temperature of 29°C recorded during the race.

Pedrosa’s win at Motegi means he closes the gap to Lorenzo in the championship table to twenty-eight points with three rounds remaining. On the other Repsol Honda, Casey Stoner remains third overall in the riders classification after a valiant fifth place in his comeback race following an ankle injury.

Yuichiro Takenami – Vice President and Senior Officer, Corporate Communications and Motorsport
“My warmest congratulations to Dani and Repsol Honda for their victory at Motegi today. This was a very enjoyable weekend for the fans with the nice weather, various paddock activities and an exciting race combining to create a pleasant atmosphere, and I am pleased that Bridgestone is able to take part in such a wonderful activity. We are proud of our partnership with MotoGP as it provides the best possible environment for us to develop motorcycle tyre technology for the racetrack and road, and we are committed to continuing our fair and equal support of every rider and team in the paddock with the highest level of service.”

Shinichi Yamashita – General Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development Department
“Today’s race was held under cooler conditions than those experienced on Friday and Saturday, though this didn’t have any effect on tyre choice. All riders selected the same tyre combination of the harder front and softer rear slick as high levels of rear grip and front-end stability are important at Motegi due to its stop-and-go layout. The tyres performed well during the race with a new circuit lap record being set and the top three riders completing the race faster than last year’s total race time. Overall, it was a positive showing for our 2012 specification MotoGP tyres at Bridgestone’s home Grand Prix.”

Unexpected results at Motegi for the NGM Mobile Forward Racing Team Moto2

Yuki Takahashi Motegi 2012

Yuki Takahashi and Alex De Angelis did not succeed in their set goal of being in the points at the AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan after a complicated qualifying session and equally challenging race.

The Japanese finished the race in 16th position at only a few thousandths from the getting the first points of the season, while for Alex De Angelis the grip problems condemn his weekend.

Yuki Takahashi – 16th
“Today was the home Grand Prix for Japan and I wanted to do my best. The start was not so bad and after three laps I made a mistake and did an overland and lost some positions and after that I concentrated on keeping a good pace and recover those positions but it was difficult. This weekend we tried many different settings and during the race we gathered important data. I am happy because I know that if I had not made that mistake I could have taken points and we can see now the potential we really have. I will continue working in this direction in Sepang.”

Alex de Angelis - 20th
“We worked very hard this weekend to try and find the best possible solution but in the race the bike moved a lot because we had no grip what so ever. I tried to push and even changed my riding style during the race but it didn’t make a difference. We have to go over the data from this weekend and try to understand why. The grip on track was non existent and it’s a problems that we need to solve.”

Pietro Caprara – Moto2 Technical Director
“An unfortunate race for Yuki Takahashi who went straight losing many positions after a very good start. Difficult conditions for both of our riders due to the lack of grip. For Alex  there was also a lack of grip. He goes to Malaysia with a new take on things, going to a track in which he has been on the podium before in Moto2. We have positive expectations.”

Excellent results for Edwards at Motegi GP

Colin Edwards Motegi 2012

Colin Edwards and the NGM Mobile Forward Racing Team finish off an important weekend in thirteenth position at the Japanese Grand Prix and as the second best CRT.

A very small gap separates the NGM Mobile Forward Racing Team with this Suter- BMW bike from their direct competitor in the CRT category Aleix Espargaro, with who he could have had rivaled with if it hadn’t been for Edwards unfortunate el lose of the right knee pad on the fourth lap.

Colin Edwards – 13th
“The race started good and I saw Espargaro was right there I started pushing and felt good, four laps in, I went to put my knee down in the last corner and it nearly ripped me off the bike and I looked down on the straight and I saw I had no knee pad. It just fell off, I don’t remember hitting a curb or anything. Initially I was thinking I had to pull in because I ride like a tripod, put my knee down and let the bike work underneath me. Just thought about the bootcamp, feet up, use your body, be smooth.  We had a small issue with electronics during the race but overall the package is getting a little better. Thanks to my team, they’ve done a great job this weekend.”

Sergio Verbena – Crew Chief
“It has been a very positive weekend in which we have been very close to the top CRTs during the race but have yet to decrease that gap some more. During the race Colin has practically annulled the difference that separated him from the ART getting really close to it but not actually overtaking Espargaro in the end. At the end of the race when he came in to the pit box we realized that the race could have been even more successful had he not lost his kneepad during the fourth lap, we all know how important they are for a rider. He even considered for a second coming into the pits but decided to make the best of it and went for it. We are very pleased.”

Vinales Keeps Title Hopes Alive at Motegi

Maverick Vinales Motegi 2012

Maverick Viñales (Blusens Avintia) kept his Moto3 World Championship title hopes alive at Motegi today in a dramatic Grand Prix of Japan

The Spanish teenagers came through a fearsome late skirmish to finish second and third respectively, with Viñales now 56 points shy of the series lead with 75 still up for grabs in the three remaining rounds.

Maverick Viñales:
“It was a very difficult race, but Lady Luck smiled upon us a little today. We were able to claw back 10 points and I am happy. I couldn't do any more today; I went at my own pace and tried not to lose sight of the group. I was at the limit on every lap, which is why I am a little disappointed. We had a very good pace in practices and a strong engine which put me right behind the KTMs, but in the race the engine didn't work like it should have, which was a pity."
