Casey Stoner to test for HRC

Casey Stoner MotoGP Phillip Island 2012

Casey Stoner will climb back on a Honda RC213V, for the first time since Valencia 2012, as a test rider for Honda Racing Corporation. The two-time World Champion left the sport at the end of last year and has been linked with rumours of a wild card appearance this season but this is now out of the question.

The Australian rider will do four tests in Motegi in the next few months with Honda Racing's R&D team, working on the evolution of the RC213V and also on the new production racer bike that Honda Racing will sell to selected team next year to race in MotoGP.

Casey Stoner
"It's been almost 7 months now since Valencia and I'm still happy and comfortable with the decision I made to stop racing. Sometimes I miss riding my RCV, so I am happy that HRC asked me to do some tests in Motegi this year. This will allow me to enjoy what I miss: riding a MotoGP bike! I'm looking forward to getting on the bike and see how it has changed from last year and I'd like to thank Honda for this opportunity"

Shuhei Nakamoto - HRC Executive Vice President
"We are very pleased to have Casey back on a Honda! He knows this machine very well and I'm sure he can help our engineers and technicians with the development of the RC213V. We will also ask him to test the new production racer and give us his initial feedback to assist us in producing the best machine possible"

Casey Stoner for Phillip Island Wildcard?

Casey Stoner Valencia MotoGP 2013
Some rumors told that Casey Stoner may return to MotoGP as a wildcard rider on Phillip Island and Motegi race. No official statement from Stoner, but Livio Suppo behalf on HRC told that Honda open for Casey Stoner if he want to race as a wildcard rider

Stoner won his first Australian GP on 2007 and unbeatable until last year race 2012.

Livio Suppo:
“I’m not sure where this rumour has come from but in the past Casey said one day in an interview that maybe he would like to do a wild card but there is nothing done. It is a kind of a dream for everybody to think that maybe one day we will see him riding a bike again but at the moment nothing is done. Of course if Casey would like to do it then we would be more than happy but in this moment I think Casey needs to be concentrated on his new adventure in the V8 series. Of course this would be discussed if it were something Casey expressed an interest in. It would not be easy because to do a wild card with Casey it means you would have to do it properly. But with a rider like Casey you would try and do your best to do it.”

Casey Stoner Official for V8 Supercar Dunlop Series

Casey Stoner V8 Supecar Dunlop Series 2013

Former two-time MotoGP World Champion, Casey Stoner will ride for Triple Eight Racing on V8 Supercar Dunlop Series 2013. The first race will begin at February 28th at Clipsal 500 street race in Adelaide.

Casey Stoner will conduct a V8 test on February 16 at Sydney Motorsport Park with the Triple Eight Racing Team

Casey Stoner:
"Since I was 12, I've always been interested in it. It was always my plan during my whole career to drive a V8. It's now the new chapter in my career but I have to be realistic and see if we're capable of doing anything. The hardest thing I have had to do is change whatever I know about braking and changing through gears. I am having to rethink again. I have to forget everything I know about bikes and change to learn to drive these."

Roland Dane, Triple Eight Racing
"I see no reason at all why Casey shouldn't be very competitive in a V8 Supercar. When you have spent most of your life away chasing your dreams, you have to work pretty hard at it. I think Casey has developed a steely determination to succeed at anything he does."

Pedrosa wins 2012 finale, Stoner third in his last race

Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa Parc Ferme Valencia 2012

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC213V) scored a masterful victory in today’s Valencia grand finale, winning an incident-packed race that started on partially damp and very unforgiving track. The Spanish hero was joined on the podium by third-placed Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC213V), riding his last race before retirement.

Morning rain had left the slow-drying track still wet in places, despite the earlier Moto2 and Moto3 races, so there were plenty of deliberation about tyre choice before the start. Some riders chose slicks, others rain tyres. Pedrosa was one of several riders who started the warm-up lap on rain tyres, then decided to change, rushing into the pits and swapping to their slick-equipped spare bikes. According to the rules, Pedrosa started the race from pit lane, after the main pack, his RC213V fishtailing as he launched, its slick tyres struggling for grip on still-soaking pit road.

Pedrosa took care in the first few laps, working hard to get heat into his tyres and stay on the narrow dry line. At the end of lap one he was 20th, but by lap three he was up to 11th and the fastest man on the track, making good progress over rivals who had started on rain tyres.

However, Pedrosa was not the only man on slicks. Recently crowned World Champion Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) and a few others had started the race on slicks from the grid and it was not long before Lorenzo was in the lead. Pedrosa moved into second just before one-quarter distance and then began to whittle away his compatriot’s advantage. He had got the gap down to just one tenth of a second when he found a false neutral and ran off the track at turn ten which put him four seconds behind. The very next lap Lorenzo crashed at the same right-hander that had nearly claimed Pedrosa.

The vast majority of the eight crashes during the race round this anti-clockwise circuit where in right-handers, the riders struggling to get enough heat into the right side of their tyres.

When Lorenzo tumbled, Pedrosa inherited a 22 second lead over Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow (who later crashed) and from then on his main challenges were maintaining concentration and staying on the narrow dry line. At the finish he was a gaping 37.6 seconds ahead of Katsuyuki Nakasuga (Yamaha), substituting for the injured Ben Spies. This was his seventh win of the year – a MotoGP record for the 27-year-old.

Stoner was one of the majority who started the race on rain tyres, the 2011 World Champion soon deciding he needed slicks and pitting at the end of lap four to change to his ‘dry’ bike. Next time around he was 16th and 31 seconds outside of a podium finish. His advance from that position was impressively determined as he passed other riders and made up a few more places as others fell by the wayside. He moved into third with two laps to go, giving him the opportunity to mark the end of his glittering career with a podium finish.

Nine years ago Stoner won his first GP victory – in the 125 class – here at Valencia. Today the Australian hangs up his leathers as one of the sport’s all time greats, with two MotoGP World Championships and 45 Grand Prix wins across all three classes.

The final victim of Stoner’s career was Bautista who nonetheless had good reason to be happy with his fourth-place finish. Like Pedrosa, Bautista also changed his mind about tyres during the warm-up lap, swapping bikes in pit lane and starting from there. He worked his way through from 19th on the first lap, riding well in the unforgiving conditions.

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: race winner
“After Marquez's race, I thought I should do something similar! But seriously, I'm really happy with this win. It was very difficult at the start to make the decision with tyres. I saw Jorge on slicks on the grid and I was pretty sure with my decision, but standing there the track was drying up very quickly and before the start I didn't know if it would be better to forget about the pole and start from the pits or go out on wets and stop after four or five laps. In the last corner of the sighting lap, the instinct told me to get in immediately. I started from the pit lane and I managed to be fast from the beginning. I caught Jorge and then I made a mistake and lost three seconds again, but one lap later he also made a mistake and crashed out. From this point another race began for me. It was tough to maintain concentration with such conditions and a big advantage, so I planned the second half of the race like a practice session, taking the corners, the lines, lap by lap. It's a great end of the season and I'd like to thank all the Repsol Honda Team!”

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: 3rd
“Considering everything that happened today, we're very happy with a podium. My motivation wasn't particularly high as I haven't wanted to push in the wet and haven't felt comfortable on the bike. I just didn't want to take any risks of crashing and damaging my ankle again so I was very cautious and this isn't how I like to ride. Even with the choice of going with the wets, not the slick tyres at the beginning of the race, I took the easy option, which really isn't me. When I saw the slicks had a big advantage, we came in and changed bikes and went back out and pushed as hard as we could, without taking unnecessary risks. In the end we were able to chase down Alvaro and take the last spot on the podium in our last race. My team are like my second family, we've been through a lot of ups and downs together and it's going to be difficult not to see them every week. I'm sorry for them and for everyone who has supported me for so long but this is the way it is and it's time to say goodbye. Thank you to all the people who have supported us over the years and all our sponsors, and to everyone in the Repsol Honda Team.”

Stoner looks to bow out on a high in Valencia

Casey Stoner Philli Island 2012

The final rider's championship positions were decided in Australia, with Dani Pedrosa in second and Casey Stoner third, but the Grand Prix de la Comunitat Valenciana is more than just the final race for them both. Pedrosa will want to finish his best season in MotoGP to date (6 wins and 14 podiums) by adding another victory to his tremendous performances in the second half of the season. After dominating in Phillip Island two weeks ago, Stoner is almost back to 100% and will want to close his successful career by winning his final race.

The Repsol Honda riders have enjoyed good results at Valencia, with Pedrosa winning 5 times at this circuit including two premiership class victories in 2009 and 2007. For Stoner, this is the setting of his first every GP victory in 2003 in 125cc, he has also won on two occasions in MotoGP in 2011 and 2008.

The Repsol Honda Team secured the team championship title at the Malaysian Grand Prix and Honda will be hoping to win the constructor championship this weekend - Honda lead the standings with 387 points, with Yamaha in second position on 366.

Dani Pedrosa
"I'm very excited to get to Valencia and race again in front of the Spanish crowd. It's been a long time away and I really look forward to enjoying the atmosphere there; it's always a special race because it's the last one of the season and I have a lot of people there supporting me, together with my family and friends. I enjoy riding at this track and we've had good results there in the past. So, I want to make this weekend special and fight for the win and finish the season on a high.”

Casey Stoner
"Valencia should be a little better for me again, not as good as Phillip Island, but I've always had great success there, many pole positions and race wins. I hope we can be competitive there and with the track going left it should suit our bike and me a little better at this point. It's not going to be easy but it would be nice to get another good result in my final race in MotoGP.”

Stoner wins his last home MotoGP race at Phillip Island

Casey Stoner Phillip Island race 2012
Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC213V) capped off a dream weekend with his sixth win in a row at his cherished Phillip Island Circuit before a record crowd of his sun-splashed fellow countrymen.

All weekend long it was clear that the reigning world champion was the man to beat and in the end no one could. So certain were the race organisers of his supremacy that they passed out paper crowns to celebrate the king’s final coronation. He did not disappoint.

Though he also did not lead every lap. Team-mate Dani Pedrosa led the first of 27 laps in his quest to keep his championship hopes alive. But in the Honda hairpin on the second lap disaster struck. Pedrosa went into the corner with a bit too much pace and crashed, ending his title hopes. Then it was up to Stoner to fly the Honda flag and he did, proudly.

For the remaining 26 laps he put on a master clinic, easing away from Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo. Stoner’s lead was never in doubt and when he crossed the line first for the sixth time at Phillip Island, and took his fourth win of the season, he had a cushion of 9.223s.

So dominant has Stoner been at Phillip Island that of the 162 race laps run over the past six years, Stoner has led 160 of them.

Lorenzo would go on to finish second to win the 2012 MotoGP World Championship with Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow third. Pedrosa is guaranteed second in the championship and Stoner third in his final season before retiring.

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: Race winner
“It was very important for me to win a race before the end of the season and I'm really happy to do it here, at home, in front of the huge crowd. My biggest worry was to be fit again and competitive for this race, but we managed it and we had something over everyone else and this was the perfect way to say goodbye here. I was pretty nervous going into the race, but the conditions were fantastic for a Phillip Island race. When I knew I only had a few laps left and a big lead, I was watching the crowd and it was fantastic to see everyone cheering me on, it made me very proud to be Australian.
My biggest congratulations to Jorge [Lorenzo]. He's ridden an almost perfect season finishing first or second when possible and I'm just disappointed not to be in the championship fight, but I made my own mistakes and this is how things go. My condolences to Dani [Pedrosa] I saw him crash out in front of me but he had to push today and go out and win the race to keep his championship hopes alive. It was a small mistake, easy to do in this corner and I feel very sorry for him. Thanks to everyone for coming down and showing their support.”

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: DNF
“It's a sad feeling more than disappointment; I pushed as hard as I could; I did what I had to do and I have no regrets for my riding, especially this season. I feel very proud of my team and of my performance throughout the year. I think after what happened in Misano, we showed a very good attitude, skill and power. So, there is some sadness because we've been closer than ever to take the title, but also proud for all we achieved.
Concerning the crash, it was nothing strange; I just went wider on the corner, I had some chatter and lost the front; maybe the tyre was not warm enough as well, but it's like it is. Congratulations to Casey [Stoner] for his sixth win at his home grand prix and to Lorenzo because he deserved the championship, as well as Marc MĂ¡rquez in Moto2.”

Casey Stoner takes pole for his Phillip Island MotoGP finale

Casey Stoner Phillip Island Qualifying 2012

Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC213V) will start from the pole position for his assault on a record sixth consecutive Australian Grand Prix win after rebounding from an early crash to set the fastest time on a cold and blustery day on his beloved Phillip Island Circuit. Team-mate Dani Pedrosa will join him on the front row after qualifying third.

Stoner was the leader almost from the start of the one-hour session, held in typically changing Phillip Island weather. And he was on top when he fell for the first time since his return to racing at the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi. Ironically, he fell on the entry of Honda Corner, a hairpin right, one of the few rights on the heavily left-biased track. Fortunately, Stoner was able to avoid the tumbling motorcycle in the gravel trap and did no further damage to his surgically repaired right ankle. That was evident when he bounded to his feet to return to his pit box.

After only a five minute respite he was out on his second bike. He would improve his lap time three more times, finishing with a best of 1m, 29.623s to capture his fifth pole position and first since the U.S. Grand Prix before the summer break. Stoner was then denied a chance to further lower his pole time when a light rain fell in the waning moments of qualifying.

Having earlier announced that he would be retiring at the end of his final campaign, Stoner is determined to go out with a victory in front of what promises to be a record crowd of his fellow countrymen.

Pedrosa was not able to challenge for the pole after encountering a few problems. First was that  he was not able to get heat into the hard rear tyre option. Then came the realisation that he had chosen the wrong motorcycle for his final charge at pole. On the last run he finally got feeling into his tyres and was able to set his best lap time.

Having won five of the past six races, Pedrosa goes into Sunday’s race hopeful of further cutting into the championship lead of Jorge Lorenzo, the Yamaha rider who qualified second.

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: Pole position – 1m 29.623s
“It's been a good progression over these past few races and it's great to get pole for my home grand prix. The bike has been good since Friday and I'm feeling comfortable on it again. It wasn't an easy session this afternoon. We went out on a hard tyre and on my out lap, as I was peeling into the Honda turn; the bike decided to flip me. I tried to make sure I kept my leg out of the way as I came off, fortunately it didn't get caught up. My left hip is hurting a little as I landed on it, but hopefully we shouldn't have any issues with it tomorrow. The bike feels pretty good for race pace. We would have liked to have done some more work in this afternoon's session, but we lost time after the crash. A big thanks to all the fans for coming out and putting up with this weather, hopefully we can turn this pole into a win tomorrow.”

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 3rd – 1m 30.575s
“I was trying some different things on the bike to get a little more comfortable, but they didn't work out very well for the middle of the session. On my first soft rear tyre I couldn't improve and then on my last run I was going quicker on the first lap and rain arrived. Anyway, to be on the front row again is very good and I think we found a good bike setting for tomorrow's race. Casey (Stoner) is unreachable, he's on another level and doing an amazing job this weekend, but my pace is quite similar to Jorge's, (Lorenzo) so I hope to be at least constant for the fight with him.”

Repsol Honda duo hunt victory at Phillip Island

Dani Pedrosa Sepang 2012
Pedrosa is fighting stronger than ever to keep the title battle alive and Stoner is aiming to take his sixth victory in a row at his home track before leaving the sport after Valencia. Pedrosa's six wins and fourteen podiums from 16 races place him second in the championship, 23 points off Jorge Lorenzo and with 50 more on offer in the last two races.

It will also be a very special weekend in Phillip Island for teammate Casey Stoner. Stoner set his sights on retuning to action at the Australian Grand Prix after he was injured in Indianapolis in August. He was able to return two rounds earlier in Motegi, claiming fifth position, and jumped onto the podium at Sepang last Sunday, finishing third. However, it's no secret that it would be very special for Stoner to win the last race of his MotoGP career in Phillip Island, where he has dominated the past five years.

Dani Pedrosa
"Phillip Island is a great track, especially on these machines where you can usually see rear slides. The layout of the track makes racing very nice, so I hope we have good luck and that the bike is working well there also. I have very good memories from my championships back in 2004-2005 and I hope I can have a good race.”

Casey Stoner
"We've really struggled with the bike set up in the past two races and I'm pretty disappointed with this. We always seem to find our rhythm in Phillip Island but I don't expect it to come easily this year. Thankfully the track goes to the left and we're having a lot less issues with chatter when it goes this way. Also there aren't so many sharp turns so my right leg might be able to deal with it a little better. I'm still nowhere near 100% physically and I still need time to be back to full strength so I'm not really sure what to expect this weekend, we'll do our best and see what happens.”

First wet victory for Pedrosa

Dani Pedrosa Sepang 2012

The treacherous conditions today in Sepang caused the race to be cancelled with six laps remaining due to heavy tropical rain. Dani was 6.4 seconds ahead of Jorge Lorenzo and Stoner was chasing him for second place when the red flag was displayed and prevented him progressing any further.

Today, Pedrosa celebrated his first victory in wet conditions, his sixth of the 2012 season and the 44th in his Grand Prix career, equalling Lorenzo and Stoner in the ranking of all time winners. It's the first time that Dani has won three races in a row in the premier class and he is the first Spanish rider ever to win in Malaysia in MotoGP. He has also beaten his record of 13 podiums in a season and continues to chase the title with two races remaining.

Stoner returned to the podium -his sixth of the season- in only his second race back after injury forced him to miss three races since Indianapolis. The 2011 World Champion was cautious and therefore unable match the pace of Dani and Jorge in the early laps, but his confidence grew and he began to find his rhythm as the race progressed and was closing the gap to Lorenzo when the race was stopped.

With today's double podium, the 7th of the season, the Repsol Honda Team have clinched the 2012 Team Championship with two races remaining.

Dani Pedrosa
"This victory is really amazing for me; it's the first time I've won in the wet in my life and I'm really, really happy. I want to thank my team and the people who helped me to get here because when I started racing in these conditions I was weak and they know how difficult it's been during all this time! Jorge set a really high pace at the beginning of the race and I remained calm to stay with him. I knew he was on a soft rear tyre and he could pull out some good laps at the start. Lap by lap I got a little more confident and I could still push and at half way in the race I overtook him and built a good gap. Some laps later the rain came down heave and it was hard to stay on the bike. I was lucky to be able to win this race, and also Jorge to finish second because he was almost on the ground. So, I'm happy for the victory, but especially happy to be able to dedicate it to Ginés, a good friend and member of the Repsol Honda Team that sadly passed away yesterday. This one is for you!"

Casey Stoner
"At the start of the race, I would have been very happy for a podium. I was considering not taking part in the rain at all as the risks were very high - if I had come off the bike again and hit my ankle, it would have been game over for the rest of the season. As the race progressed I slowly got my confidence back and I was working on different things, as I hadn't ridden in the wet in quite some time. I slowly began to catch the front two but unfortunately ran out of time as the red flagged the race. In a lot of ways I'm disappointed, but I'm happy with the points haul we took today and another podium.”

Pedrosa second quickest at Sepang, Stoner a close fourth

Dani Pedrosa Sepang 2012

Impressive Pedrosa is very much the man of the moment – having won four of the last five races, including the last two from second on the grid – and will be doing everything he can to score another victory tomorrow and further close the gap on World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) who will start from pole.

Pedrosa believes he may well have had the pace to be quickest today, but for a return of the tyre chatter issues that have dogged him at many circuits this season. The Spaniard had similar issues at Motegi last weekend, but his crew was able to largely resolve them in time for the race, which he dominated.

However, the chatter seems worse than ever here because of the nature of the Sepang circuit, which has always created this phenomenon. Pedrosa is not the only one suffering – all the fast riders have complained of chatter, a high-frequency vibration that can lead to a sudden loss of grip in the corners.

This is Stoner’s second race since returning from the nasty right ankle injury he sustained at August’s Indianapolis GP and he has done brilliantly to qualify less than half a second off pole. The injury was a major handicap in Japan last weekend, but is less so here, though it is still causing him problems, especially on the exit of right-handers because the ankle joint has only minimal movement. Stoner is also battling chatter and believes he would be significantly faster without the problem.

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 2nd – 2m 00.538s
“It was hard because we had a lot of chattering this afternoon and it was very difficult to get a clean lap as in some areas the bike was chattering too much, even on the straight! Nevertheless, we managed to get on the front row again and second position is good. The pace is high and after missing FP2 yesterday because of the mixed conditions, this morning we worked hard on the race pace. I just hope that we don’t have this chattering for the race. The weather can play an important role too, so we’ll have to see what happens tomorrow afternoon.”

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: 4th – 2m 00.811s
“It’s been a really disappointing weekend, but especially today. We’ve had pace all weekend and the first session looked promising, but we’ve had problems with the brakes and some other small issues. Every step we take to try and improve the bike, we make it worse and it’s becoming very frustrating. Our potential is much higher than where we are currently at and now we go into the race without any real direction. Physically I’m not sure how I am going to be as we haven’t been able to complete many laps this weekend, our pace is there and I just hope that we can make some small improvements in tomorrow’s warm up.”
