Repsol Honda Review Phillip Island Tyre Test Day 3

Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa has completed the three-day tyre test in Phillip Island, signalling an end to his Winter testing schedule and a gruelling six days testing in the past eight days.

With weather conditions changing drastically from yesterday, air temperatures down by 13ºC and the track 20ºC cooler, Dani waited until 12pm to go out on track, as light rain threatened the cliff top circuit. Fortunately, the rain never came and Dani was able to follow Bridgestone’s schedule. He recorded his fastest time of 1’29.458 on lap 18 and ended his day with a longer run of 14 laps, taking his total for the day to 32, and over the three days to 178 laps.

The next time Dani will be on track, he will be rejoined by his teammate Marc Marquez, for the first practice session of the season opening Qatar Grand Prix, on Thursday 20th March.

Dani Pedrosa - 2nd (1'29.458)
Overall, this has been a positive three days. Today we tried to do another 20-lap race simulation with the second best tyre that we had. I didn't fully complete it, only managing 14 laps, because after so many days riding I had some neck ache. In any case, generally speaking it was a test that went well. We have enough data gathered not only for Bridgestone, but also for ourselves, so I think that it has been positive and now we shall try to rest up a bit. It's all about continuing our training now, with the first race in Qatar on the horizon.

Ducati Team Review Phillip Island MotoGP Tyre Test

Today was the third and final day of testing for the Ducati Team at the Phillip Island circuit. The Australian session had been organized by IRTA and Bridgestone with the specific aim of developing the Japanese tyres in view of the Australian Grand Prix in October, and it was reserved for the official teams of the three manufacturers taking part in the MotoGP World Championship.

Following the good results obtained at Sepang last week, in Australia the two Ducati Team riders were able to carry out the work requested by Bridgestone, which included an appraisal of compound, construction and profile technology, and race simulation, as well as a continuation of development work on the Desmosedici GP14 in ‘Open’ configuration. The tyres available for the three teams present at the tests were however the same for all.

After three days of intense work, Andrea Dovizioso concluded the test with an overall third fastest time of 1m29.387s, three-tenths of a second away from the quickest rider, while his team-mate Cal Crutchlow ended up fifth with a best time of 1m29.576s.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team #04) – 3rd (1m29.387s)
“Unfortunately I wasn’t feeling at 100% these days, but when I was able to lap my feeling with the bike was good and so I’m pretty satisfied with this test at Phillip Island. We continued development work on the GP14 and on this track, which is very different to Sepang, we were again able to obtain results that make us feel confident for the future. Our pre-season tests have been quite positive and now I can’t wait for the championship to start.”

Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team #35) – 5th (1m29.576s)
"The team worked great at Phillip Island. We had a lot of stuff to try for Bridgestone over the three days to evaluate the rear tyre. I’m happy enough to go away from here feeling positive at this circuit. At no point did I push for a one-off lap time over the three days, so I’m confident we could have made an improvement if we’d needed to but the test was about evaluating the tyres for Bridgestone and I wasn’t taking any unnecessary risks.”

Luigi Dall'Igna (Ducati Corse General Manager)
“For us it was important to show that we could also make progress at Phillip Island, on a track that is so different from Sepang in Malaysia. We also tried to do a race simulation, which is always very useful. I am quite pleased with the results, but in any case we still have a lot of work to do before becoming really competitive.”

Rapid Rabat blitzes Phillip Island tyre test

Tito Rabat smashed the Moto2 lap record by almost half a second, to end the Phillip Island tyre test at the top of the timesheet. The 24-year-old Spaniard was quickest on day one, but his time of 1'32.168 on day two was the fastest ever recorded by a Moto2 bike at Phillip Island.

But it wasn't just his Moto2 rivals who had their eye on Rabat; the Marc VDS rider was also quicker than all but two of the MotoGP riders through sector two on the first two days of the test.

Only a crash at turn two late in the afternoon on the final day marred Rabat's Phillip Island test. While his Kalex Moto2 machine was badly damaged, Rabat himself walked away from the crash with minor grazes on his lower back.

Mika Kallio ended the three-day test second on the Moto2 timesheet, despite crashing heavily at Siberia late on Monday afternoon. The 31-year-old Finn was lucky to walk away with only a bruised left wrist, but the injury hampered his efforts to close the half-second gap to his teammate over the remaining two days.

Rabat and Kallio completed an extensive test programme for Dunlop at Phillip Island, including race simulations in both the hot conditions of day two and the cooler conditions of day three. The two Marc VDS riders declared themselves happy with both the performance and endurance of the tyres supplied by Dunlop at the test.

Tito Rabat // 1'32.168 // 241 Laps
“I'm really happy with how the test has gone overall. We came here to test tyres, but we've also managed to confirm a lot of things on the bike, as well as improving the suspension set up, the operation of the shifter and many other things. The first two days were good, with the lap time improving with each exit, but I'm a little bit disappointed that a crash during my race simulation ended today's testing early. I was chasing a 1'31s lap today, but the crash caused so much damage to the bike that it wasn't possible to continue. Luckily, I walked away with just grazes, but I'm sorry for my mechanics, who now have a lot of work to do to rebuild the bike.”

Mika Kallio // 1'32.698 // 202 Laps
“Alongside the tyre testing for Dunlop we wanted to work more on our base set up here at Philip Island. Last year the changes we had to make at different circuits were too big, so we've been working towards a more balanced base set up on the bike. So far it's worked at Valencia, Jerez and now Phillip Island, three very different circuits, so we're definitely going in the right direction. Some of the tyres Dunlop brought to this test were too stiff in the construction for my riding style, but the two we used for the race simulations today were good. Now it will be up to Dunlop to decide which tyres they bring for the race, not an easy choice given the difference in conditions on the second and third days. Hopefully at least one of my preferred tyres will be included in the race selection.”

Pete Benson // Chief Mechanic, Tito Rabat
“The focus of the test has been on tyre testing for Dunlop, but we've also managed to do a couple of other little things with the suspension and the quick shifter, to try and make it a little smoother, which have both been quite positive. Tito has just been completely focussed the whole three days. Lapping on or under lap record pace, lap after lap, just seems quite effortless to him at the moment. It's been a good test for us and, I hope, it's been equally productive for Dunlop.”

Repsol Honda Review Phillip Island Tyre Test Day 2

Dani Pedrosa has completed an active second day in the Bridgestone tyre test in Phillip Island, finishing second with a time of 1’29.381 recorded on lap 20 of 58. With fantastic weather conditions, Dani was able to fulfil Bridgestone’s plan including a long run of 20 laps which he reported positively on, even though he hit a bird in the process.

The three-day test will conclude tomorrow, when rain is expected to hit the Australian circuit, and signals an end to Winter testing for the Factory teams.

Dani Pedrosa - 2nd (1'29.381)
Today we tried two more tyres with a different construction - but with the same compound - and the feeling was not great with them. In any case, we picked the best of what we have tried over the past two days and put in 20 laps with those tyres. That experiment worked rather well, but it's really Bridgestone who have to analyse the data and give us their feedback for us to work with tomorrow.

Repsol Honda Review Phillip Island Tyre Test

Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa has finished the first day of the three-day tyre test in Australia, completing 88 laps (more than any other MotoGP rider) with a best lap of 1’29.961 on lap 43 placing him 4th.

Bridgestone brought eight rear slick tyres per rider to this test – two 2013 specification tyres and six new experimental tyres with changes to construction, compound and shape. Today, Dani’s programme was to start on the 2013 tyres – for comparison purposes – and then perform short runs (of at least 6 laps) on the experimental tyres to collect initial data.

Tomorrow and Wednesday longer runs of 15 laps or more will be requested, depending on weather, to gather sufficient information to take back to Bridgestone in Japan. If possible, they would like each rider to complete a full race simulation on the final day.

Dani Pedrosa - 4th  (1'29.961)
This morning I spent time riding to regain my feel for this track, and then after lunch I began the testing programme with the new compounds. We've been evaluating the different tyres that have been brought here, and tomorrow we will continue our testing with another compound.

Marquez to miss Phillip Island test

It is now confirmed that Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez, who broke his fibula last Wednesday in a training accident, will not be fit enough to test before the first race of 2014.

After a check-up today with Dr. Mir in Barcelona, it was advised that Marc takes this opportunity to rest, rather than risk further injury, in order to prepare for the Qatar GP, which will begin in just three weeks.

Marc Marquez:
“I’m obviously disappointed that I’m not in Sepang at the moment and to miss Phillip Island is also unfortunate, but we believe it is the best decision. After my meeting today with Dr. Mir, although he was happy with the general situation of my leg after only seven days since the accident, he advised against taking unnecessary risk. So I will take time to rest and get myself as fit as possible to return to Qatar for the first race in the best shape possible”

Go&Fun Honda Gresini Press Release MotoGP Phillip Island Race

Alvaro Bautista MotoGP Phillip Island 2013

Alvaro Bautista managed to produce another challenge for the podium today but with the decision forced on him to run a hard tyre that did not suit the setting of his bike the Spaniard was unable to break into the top three at the end. Alvaro missed out by just two tenths following a thrilling battle with Valentino Rossi and Cal Crutchlow, although his race was further proof of his competitiveness in the second half of this season. Bryan Staring's home Grand Prix ended with disqualification for staying on track beyond the allotted ten laps before a compulsory pit stop to change tyres.

Alvaro Bautista
“We have managed to salvage a race that we knew was going to be difficult for us because of the enforced tyre choice. We knew it didn't work with our bike but we fought hard and thanks to the exceptional work of the team we have come away with a result we didn't expect. I gave my best, did everything I could on the bike and I have to be happy because I was fighting for a podium finish until the very end. Unfortunately on the last lap I just felt that I couldn't push the tyre any harder and it's a shame because I know that on the soft option we would have been able to get on the podium and achieve the objective we have set ourselves for before the end of the season.”

Bryan Staring
“Today couldn't have gone worse. I was hoping for a good race in front of my home crowd and instead it has ended prematurely with a black flag.”

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Press Release MotoGP Phillip Island Race

Cal Crutchlow MotoGP Phillip Island 2013

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team celebrated a fantastic double top six finish for Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith in an action-packed and unique flag-to-flag MotoGP race at Phillip Island this afternoon.

Concerns about excessive tyre wear on a new track surface meant the race was reduced to 19-laps on safety grounds, which included a mandatory pit stop for fresh Bridgestone rubber at the end of lap nine or 10.

There was incredible drama and tension from start to finish and Crutchlow put up a tremendous fight to score his fifth rostrum of the campaign and second in succession at the super-fast Phillip Island track.

The 27-year-old pulled into the pits to switch bikes at the end of the 10th lap and in a tense tussle with Valentino Rossi and Alvaro Bautista, the British rider fought for the podium right down to the final corner.

As rain spots started to fall on the Phillip Island track on the final lap, Crutchlow missed out on his first podium since his second place in Germany by just over 0.1s, with Rossi claiming the final podium spot in front of a crowd of 31,500 enthralled fans.

Teammate Bradley Smith stormed back into the top six for the first time since the German round after he made a sensational start to round 16. The 22-year-old got a stunning launch off the line and on the first lap he’d surged into fourth and was right on the back of leading Spanish trio Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa.

Smith gained precious experience after dicing it out with Rossi, Crutchlow and Bautista in the early stages and he employed a different strategy by opting to enter the pit lane at the end of lap nine.

He was able to comfortably clinch a richly deserved top six finish and today’s performance gave a significant boost to his hopes of securing a top 10 World Championship finish, with his lead over Aleix Espargaro now 11-points with two races remaining.

Crutchlow and Smith’s excellent display also moved the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team a step closer to clinching third in the Team World Championship standings.

Cal Crtuchlow
“It was a bit of shame that I couldn’t finish on the podium today but to be honest I’d have only been there because of what happened to Marc. But I am happy because I rode really well. The problem once again was my start. I have got to work on that because once again today it wasn’t acceptable. The positive point is I had good consistency in the race and I was a lot faster than I expected to be given what had happened with the tyres over the weekend. It was good to race so close to Valentino on the factory Yamaha and I enjoyed it. It was a very hard but fair battle with him and Alvaro. I actually thought there was one more lap, but because I’d been so close to Valentino on the straight I’d not seen my pit board. I’d have liked to be on the podium but fourth is my best result for a few races and hopefully we can be strong in Japan next weekend."

Bradley Smith
“Sixth position is a very good result and I got another really fast start. It was great to be right up there on the first lap and I could learn a lot in the early stages from the guys with much more experience. The setting we ran wasn’t ready to fight for the top six but I gave it my best shot. We damaged the rear tyre in the first run, so I tried to take it a bit steady in the second one. It has not been an easy weekend with a lot of drama and confusion surrounding the tyres, but my Monster Yamaha Tech 3 crew remained calm and concentrated throughout and it was good to pay them back with my first top six for a while.”

Yamaha Factory Racing Press Release MotoGP Phillip Island Race

Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Phillip Island 2013

Defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo delivered a stunning ride today to win the Australian Grand Prix in a thrilling spectacle filled with drama. Teammate Valentino Rossi delivered another exciting performance, fighting to take third on the podium.

Following concerns over the safety of the Bridgestone tyres to last full race distance the race was changed to incorporate a bike change at the ten-lap mark, with the total laps reduced to 19.

The start saw Lorenzo take the hole-shot from his pole position with riders Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa in hot pursuit. The reigning champion gave no quarter but was unable to pull away, the rivals staying within 0.5 of a second as they counted down to the pit stop. This itself turned into a bizarre event with potential consequences for the championship. Pedrosa pitted a lap early, Lorenzo pitted at the ten-lap mark and Marquez pitted a lap too late. As a result Marquez was given a black flag and disqualified and Pedrosa was forced to drop a position after crossing the white line on his pit lane exit.

Further disaster was also narrowly avoided when Marquez exited the pits just as Lorenzo passed down the straight at high speed, the two making contact into turn one. Luckily both were able to stay upright and continue. Lorenzo kept the pressure on and held the top spot for the remaining nine laps to claim the race win.

Rossi enjoyed yet another intense race long battle with rivals Cal Crutchlow and Alvaro Bautista. The three swapping positions in the fight for the last podium spot throughout the first ten laps and again in the following nine. Rossi completed a super fast pit stop, beating both out to gain two positions. As one of the most successful MotoGP riders of the modern era in Phillip Island it was never going to be easy for them to beat him, and they couldn’t. The Italian claimed third at the line to make it another double Yamaha podium.

The result leaves Lorenzo now on 280 points, 18 behind Marquez as they head to Motegi for the final of the triple-headers. Rossi stays secure in fourth position on 214 points, 35 ahead of Crutchlow in fifth.

Jorge Lorenzo
“I’m really happy with this win, we’ve also been lucky because Marc made this mistake. Without that he would have been second or first because he was really fast today. So we’ve been lucky but we were unlucky in the middle of the championship so today is a balance. When I was entering the first corner Marc was exiting the pit at exactly the same time, the situation was almost impossible to avoid. I was braking a little later to open the line and I don't think he was looking so much entering the corner so it was both our fault. Now we have options, if Marc keeps constant on the podium then it is impossible to win the championship but there are a lot of laps to go so anything could happen. It’s unbelievable to have 50 Grand Prix victories at 26years old. It seems like only yesterday when I won in Brazil in 2003 but it’s been ten years. I’m very proud of it and hope to win some more in the future!”

Valentino Rossi
“At the end the result was good, I’m so happy to be on the podium here at Phillip Island because it’s always a great pleasure and a great atmosphere. I tried to give the maximum, the race was very thrilling and I enjoyed it very much, especially because with the team we were able to do a very good job in the pit and gain two positions. I had a great battle with Cal, when I understood it was for the podium I tried to give the maximum. In the last half of the lap it started to rain which was very scary but at the end it was ok and a good result. We still need to work and improve to be faster for the next race.”

Tech 3 Racing Moto2 Press Release Moto2 Phillip Island Race

Danny Kent Moto2 Phillip Island 2013

The Tech 3 Racing Team experienced a day of contrasting fortunes for Danny Kent and Louis Rossi in a shortened Tissot Australian Moto2 Grand Prix at the picturesque Phillip Island track.

This afternoon’s race was run over a reduced distance of just 13-laps after official tyre supplier Dunlop requested a revised format on safety grounds because of tyre endurance concerns on new asphalt at the spectacular 4.4km coastal circuit.

The sprint race started superbly for Rossi, who got a fast start and was quickly able to move into contention for his first points scoring finish since the Dutch TT in Assen.

Rossi has been fast and consistent all weekend on board the Mistral 610 machine, which is designed and developed exclusively by the French-based Tech 3 squad for World Championship competition.

With air temperatures reaching an unusually high 27 degrees, Rossi’s impressive charge through the field took him to 12th position, which put him firmly on course to score a season best finish.

He was confident he could continue moving forward when he tumbled unhurt out at the Siberia right-hand corner on lap six in an incident that was the consequence of a engine issue.

Rossi’s exit out of contention promoted Kent into the top 15 and the British rider enjoyed an exciting fight with compatriot Gino Rea for 13th position, which went right down to the chequered flag.

The 19-year-old was able to hold off the determined challenge of Rea and his reward was a third successive points scoring finish for the first time in the 2013 World Championship campaign.

The Tech 3 Racing Team now heads to Japan for the conclusion of a gruelling three-week world tour before the season ends in Valencia next month.

Danny Kent 13th
“I can’t deny I was quite fortunate to score points today. There were a lot of crashes, people jumping the start and early in the race I was struggling with the pain in my neck and shoulder after the crash on Friday. I got more comfortable once the adrenaline kicked in and I was having a good battle with Gino at the end of the race. It was pretty easy to follow him and with two laps to go I passed him, but when you’re in front the wind blows you around a lot. I just made sure I stayed consistent and I was fast enough to keep him behind me and after a difficult weekend I am happy to be back in the points.”

Louis Rossi
“I am very disappointed because the entire weekend was very positive. We made a good step for the race with the bike and I got a fast start and was catching the group in front. I had just braked for the Siberia turn when I felt the rear wheel lock and I went into the gravel. I couldn’t keep control of the bike and crashed, but fortunately I was unhurt. In the meantime we understood that it was an issue with the engine so it's even more frustrating and a big shame because this has been a very tough season and this weekend I was competitive and improving a lot, so I am sure I could have scored my best result of 2013."

Prized Point for Pradita at Phillip Island

Doni Tata Moto2 Phillip Island 2013

Doni Tata Pradita scored his first Moto2 World Championship point today in a memorable race at Phillip Island. After a difficult start to a race that was reduced to 13 laps because of tyre problems during practice Doni fought hard to make up positions and pick up fifteenth place: 'mission accomplished' for the Indonesian rider and for Federal Oil, who have sponsored him during his rookie season.

Doni Tata Pradita (15th)
“I am so happy! Obviously this is a very important day for me. To finally achieve our objective of scoring points in such a competitive category as the Moto2 World Championship is wonderful for us. I want to thank Federal Oil and Fausto Gresini for their support during my rookie season. ”

Fausto Gresini
“I am very happy for Pradita and for Federal Oil. Doni has put a lot of effort into this season, he has listened to the advice of the team and tried his best to put it into practice and today he has been rewarded with his first championship point, which is well deserved. ”
