RW Racing Review Argentina Moto3 Day 1

For the first time since 1999 MotoGP is back in Argentina. The Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo was new and unknown to everybody. The goal for Ana Carrasco and Scott Deroue on the first day of the Argentinian GP was therefore to explore the track and found out what settings are needed to be quick.

Carrasco proved to be the most eager of the two RW Racing GP riders and quickly found her rhythm on the 4,8 kms long circuit. Carrasco was running around P15 to P18 until the final minute, in which she dropped back to P21.

In the second free practice the track was cleaner and lap times dropped. Positions changed quickly all the time. Carrasco improved her time as well, but not enough to hold her position. She finished FP2 in 27th with a best time of 1.53,460.

RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen: “Unfortunately Ana couldn’t set a fast time in her last lap, but she is on the right track for sure. She feels comfortable and confident with the bike and the track and really likes the layout of the circuit. She can do well tomorrow.”

Scott Deroue botched it up a bit in the first session, cruising around insipidly in the early stages. In doing so he rode on his own for most of the time, which isn’t the best option to learn where the limits of the track are and to find out what you need in terms of settings. Deroue finished FP1 in 28th.

That was disappointing enough to serve as a wake-up call but in FP2 Deroue first needed to make up for the track time he wasted earlier. He improved his lap time and ended the session in 23rd with a lap time of 1.52,998.

Team manager Jarno Janssen wasn’t satisfied with Deroue’s first day. “Scott could have done much better. He wasted too much time in the first session and thus was running behind in the second one. Doing one fast lap in someone’s slipstream is not what it is about in free practices. You have to use the limited time you have to find the pace and the settings that allow you to go fast.”

RW Racing Race Review Losail Moto3

With 19th position in his first ever Grand Prix, Scott Deroue can look back at Qatar satisfied and with much to think about. So does his team mate Ana Carrasco, who finished 24th, which was not what she and RW Racing GP had hoped for.

While Jack Millar crossed the line first to pick up his first Grand Prix victory, Scott Deroue and Ana Carrasco were involved in their own fierce battles. Deroue was fighting with Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Philipp Oettl for 18th place, while Ana Carrasco was a bit further down duelling for 23rd.

Deroue ended up with Khairuddin and Oettl after an excellent start which brought him from 18th to 14th. But the first laps were too much of a rollercoaster for the 18 years old Dutchman and he had to let go.

RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen: “Scott has fought like a lion, but it was a bit too much at the beginning. When you are lost for a lap or so, or make a mistake, at this level you can pack it in. This is something he has to get used to and learn from. Scott has stepped into a new world, a new level and he will need time to learn and to adapt. Now he knows... For a first Grand Prix it definitely is a good result and we are happy with it.”

Ana Carrasco has been struggling all weekend and also in the race she wasn’t full of confidence with her bike. After starting from 25th on the grid she was tangled up in a battle for 22nd, 23rd all the time with Luca Grünwald, Alessandro Tonucci and Andrea Locatelli. Grünwald and Tonucci got away and in the final lap Locatelli was able to pass Carrasco and snatch 23rd, leaving the Spanish 17 years old in 24rd.

Team manager Janssen: “Ana has fought for what she is worth, but she lacked confidence for all the weekend. The bike is the same as in testing. We’ve tried everything in terms of setup, gearing and suspension. We even tried a new engine, but it didn’t make any difference. That’s a shame. Let’s just hope Ana and the bike will have full play and be friends again in Austin.”

Scott Deroue – 19th (+36.691)

“I had a decent start and picked up a few positions immediately, but that first lap: complete madness! I thought I knew something about pushing and jostling from the Rookies Cup, but in Moto3 it is much worse. I had no idea where I was and what was going on around me. That might have cost me some of my concentration and I lost connection to the group that ended up fighting for the points. Consider it a learning point. I was with Oettl and Khairuddin and I had a good battle with them. In the last lap I came to the front of the group and I was first on the straight to the finish line. I thought I had 18th place in my pocket when Khairuddin came out of the slipstream and nicked me with a difference of 0,005. I am absolutely pleased with the results of my first Grand Prix, but at the same time I have the feeling there was more in it. I have much to think about on the flight home.” 

Ana Carrasco – 24th (+45.650)

“Obviously this is not the start of the season I’ve been hoping for. I didn’t feel comfortable with the bike from the beginning and whatever the team did, somehow I couldn’t get over it. It was a battle with the bike and myself. The team changed the engine overnight, but that didn’t bring me what I hoped for. The race wasn’t too bad, but I’m not satisfied at all with the result. This just wasn’t my weekend. Hopefully Austin will be better.”

RW Racing Review Losail Moto3 Day 3

Scott Deroue set his mark qualifying in 18th for his maiden Grand Prix, as best of the nine rookies in Moto3. His RW Racing GP team mate Ana Carrasco will start the Grand Prix of Qatar from 25th on the grid.

The 18 years old Dutchman didn’t improve his best lap time in Qatar (2.07,984 in FP3) but his 2.08,060 proved to be enough for a good position to start his first ever Grand Prix. A strong wind made it difficult to ride the light Moto3 bikes and many riders crashed. Also Deroue was bothered by the wind and the lack of grip, but he managed to stay on his Kalex KTM and turn the circumstances to his advantage.

Ana Carrasco was hit by a different kind of trouble: a lack of confidence caused by a problem with the engine that could not be fixed at the spot. Together with engine supplier KTM the team is trying to find to solution. As a consequence Carrasco had no choice but to try her best. She managed to get the maximum out of the qualifying session and ride one perfect lap in the final minutes with which she improved her time and her position.

RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen expressed his anxiety towards Carrasco. “Ana is very upset. The team has done everything to improve the bike but it turns out to be more complicated than we expected. It’s obvious we continue working on it to give Ana the best possible material. It’s going to be another long night of hard work to get it right.

As for Scott: he did a terrific job. And it can get even better, as we know he is a racer. Let’s hope the expectations will not exaggerate by this fine result.”  

Scott Deroue – 2.08,060 (18)

“In the beginning it went really bad: the wind was strong, there was sand on the track and already in the first lap Ramos crashed right in front of me. It wasn’t great. Gradually I found back confidence and I was able to do 2.09. When I came in for the second time Jarno told me I could be in the top 20. So I put my head down and gave it a go. I hooked up with McPhee, together with Ajo and Hanika, but unfortunately he couldn’t ride the top 10-times he did earlier. Otherwise there might have been more in it than P18. But I could have crashed as well…   I am more than satisfied with 18th in my first Grand Prix qualification and the fact that I’m ranked first of the nine rookies. I’m looking forward to the race tomorrow.”

Ana Carrasco – 2.09,084 (25)

“I’m totally upset. I’m happy that I could improve my time and move up a bit with one perfect lap, but that’s about it. There is something wrong with the engine and the team cannot fix it. My mechanics have really put their back into it, until deep in the night, but it still doesn’t feel good. Hopefully there is a solution so that I can start tomorrow’s warm-up with a good engine and we’ll be able to try something to improve the setup as well.”

RW Racing Review Losail Moto3 Day 2

Scott Deroue and Ana Carrasco both improved their lap times on day 2 of the Grand Prix of Qatar. Deroue was almost a second faster and set his best time on 2.07,984. That put him in 22nd in the third free practice and 23rd overall.

Carrasco had more difficulties to improve. Her 2.09,419 was good enough for 29th in the session and 30th overall.

The conditions at the Losail International Circuit were a bit different compared to the first day: a bit warmer but a lot less humid. It took most riders quite long before they could improve their times and not everybody was faster: twelve riders could not improve.

Scott Deroue set his best time in the 15th of the 16 laps he ran. Ana Carrasco did so in the 9th out of 13 laps. The Spanish girl was at grips with the Kalex KTM and complained about the steering and the power. The team will therefore change the engine overnight to see if it makes a difference.

“I like this track and I am happy I am adapting quickly. Improving with 0,9 is good, but I only did two fast laps. Looking at the whole session it still is not very consistent yet. That is something I have to work on. The position is more or less according to plan: I was around 25th in testing and now I’m looking to move up to 20.”

“This is not where I want to be nor where I belong. I don’t feel confident with the bike in the corners. It is too agitated. It is hard to find a solution in the short time we have in a session. The team is analysing the data now to see what can be done. Hopefully it gets better tomorrow when we only have the qualifying session.”

RW Racing Review Losail Moto3 Day 1

Scott Deroue and Ana Carrasco have made a good start of the 2014 season at the first day of the Grand Prix of Qatar. With 16th and 19th respectively they firmly left their mark in the first session.

In the second session Deroue improved his lap time to 2.08,897, but dropped to 25th position as the others improved even more, with Romano Fenati breaking the lap record of the Losail Circuit already. Carrasco could not go faster in FP2 and dropped to 28th overall with 2.09,420. She was bothered by a malfunctioning clutch that cost her time and rhythm.

The first day of the opening round was a long one for the Moto3 riders, with several photo shoots and a long briefing by the race direction. And of course there was the buzz of excitement for the kickoff of the new season, with so much at stake, that put some extra tension on the young riders. 

Scott Deroue – 2.08,897 (25)

“So, the start has been made. My first Grand Prix… The start was better than I could have imagined. Maybe P16 in the first practice was a little overrated and I got a bit overexcited. It was difficult to concentrate in the second practice and I even ran off the track once. But I improved my time, I like the circuit, I feel good with the bike, and 25th overall on the first day isn’t that bad.”

Ana Carrasco – 2.09,420 (28)

“I had a problem with the clutch at the start of the first practice, but it went okay and I was satisfied with the lap times and the position. I was looking for improvement in the second session but unfortunately I ran off track and the problem with the clutch reappeared. It took over 15 minutes to get it right again: valuable time that cost me my rhythm. I had to start all over again but I could get the good feeling back. It was only the first day. The team is working hard to get the bike in a good shape to try again tomorrow.”

RW Racing Review Jerez Moto3 Test Day 3

With both Ana Carrasco and Scott Deroue being faster than ever before on the Jerez circuit RW Racing GP has ended preseason testing with a good feeling. The team is looking forward to the first race in Qatar with confidence. Both riders set their personal best times in the second session of this final day: Ana Carrasco recorded 1.47.587 (23rd overall), Scott Deroue was on her heels with 1.47.797 (24th overall).

RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen was happy with the results of his hotshots. “Both did an excellent job, improving their best lap times ever. And not just single laps, but constant solid lap times. Ana and Scott have worked hard and showed progression. Compared to the test in Jerez a few weeks ago, they both are significantly faster.”

Janssen was especially satisfied with Deroue’s progression. “Scott has moved closer to the top riders. He is over a second faster than a few weeks ago, while the front runners are not that much faster. A month ago the difference was 2.6, now it is only 1.5. Considering this is a learning year, we have no specific goals set for Scott but to show an upward trend. In the light of that he is on the right track.”

Concerning Ana Carrasco Janssen was satisfied as well, although the team manager believes his Spanish pupil can go faster. “Ana has not reached her limits yet, I’m sure of that. She is faster than she has ever been and she is working tremendously hard, but I have the feeling she still has to overcome some kind of barrier.”

The team skipped the final session of the three days test in Jerez, to get everything ready for Qatar where the first Grand Prix of the season will be held in little over a week time. Both bikes were equipped with new engines and all equipment was packed into crates to be flown to Doha. The team heads home tomorrow morning to spend a few days with their families and arrange the last things before leaving to Qatar on Tuesday.

Ana Carrasco – 1.47.587 (23)

“Yesterday I was close to improving already and now I even managed to get under the 1.48. Not just a little bit or only once, but quite a big slice and several laps. It feels so good to be that fast and set personal bests. The position is a little bit disappointing, but we are close and the differences are small. My team has worked hard to give me a good bike and I have a good feeling with it. I’m getting to know the Kalex KTM better and better. With these results and progression I’m looking forward to Qatar with confidence. Let’s get started!”

Scott Deroue – 1.47.797 (24)

“I lost some time this morning due to an electronic problem with my bike, but my team worked hard to solve it and I managed to get over that pretty quickly. From the data we knew my ideal lap time was 1.47.8 and I was able to ride that. I am happy with the lap times, but not so much with the position. I would have preferred to be closer to the top 20. Looking at where I stand from a rookies point of view, I am satisfied. Karel Hanika is a class of his own, but apart from him I’m the best rookie. That is one of my personal goals. Now we are heading to Qatar and I am eagerly looking forward to my first Grand Prix.”

RW Racing Review Jerez Moto3 Test Day 2

Dutch RW Racing GP rider Scott Deroue today set his best time ever at the Jerez circuit. In the second session of the day he managed to pull 1.48.163 out of his Kalex KTM, good enough for 19th in the session and 20th overall on day 2 of the official IRTA test. His team mate Ana Carrasco came close, with 1.48.403, but could not improve more due to a broken chain.

In the morning it looked like it would become a not so useful day with heavy overcast, low temperatures and a strong wind. But shortly before the first session for the Moto3 class the sun came out and the conditions improved dramatically. Ana Carrasco did a 1.49.150 in the morning, Scott Deroue 1.49.664. In the second session, early in the afternoon, they both set off well and improved lap after lap. With a new tire Deroue put his head down and ran his fastest lap ever in Jerez, just before the end of the session.

The last session was more or less lost for both RW Racing GP riders. Carrasco was stopped by a broken chain. Deroue simply called it an early day.

Scott Deroue – 1.48.163 (20)

“I was close to a fast lap for a while, but ruined it myself in Turn 2. I have difficulties there all the time: I’m late on the brakes, but that gives me trouble in exiting again. Every time I lost connection to the rest of the group, but not this lap. I was on the tail of Ajo and made no mistakes. What I lost in Turn 2 I could make up in Turn 4. I’m really happy with this result. We’ve had a look at the data and my ideal lap time is 1.47.8. Hopefully I can get there next time, maybe tomorrow.”

Ana Carrasco – 1.48.403 (23)

“I’m having trouble in the slow corners, especially in the exit of the corner. My team is working hard to make the bike better. I could have been faster in the second session, but I had some bad luck in finding connection to a group, so I was on my own. In a group I’m less bothered by the wind, that halted me a little bit. I’m a short girl and I can’t put enough weight on the front of the bike which makes it difficult to control the front. But my main problem today was a broken chain that kept me aside in the last session. That’s a pity, but overall I’m not unsatisfied.”

RW Racing Review Jerez Moto3 Test Day 1

With 1.49.129 in the third session of the first day of the final IRTA test in Jerez Ana Carrasco improved her lap time dramatically compared to the other two sessions. But the Spanish ace was not really satisfied at the end of the day. Also her RW Racing GP team mate Scott Deroue, who set his best lap time in the second session (1.49.309), had hoped for more.

Carrasco, who had her 17th birthday yesterday, had been bothered by the wind at the sunny Andalusian circuit. Her mechanics, headed by former Grand Prix winner Hans Spaan, tried to change the setup of the Kalex KTM as much as possible to conquer the wind and make the bike easier to ride in the circumstances. Thanks to that Carrasco was able to better her time with 0,7 in the 55th of 57 laps overall.

Scott Deroue was less bothered by the wind and set his best lap time halfway through the second session, good enough for 20th position in the session. In the third session he had the feeling the grip on the tarmac had changed and it was getting more difficult to go faster.

“I’m reasonably satisfied. I ran quite some laps today and the overall feeling is fine. I know where I can find improvement: in the first sector. Accelerating out of the corner can be a lot better. Tomorrow is another day.”

“I’ve been struggling with the wind a lot. The bike was lifted by the wind and that made it difficult to ride. We’ve changed a lot on the bike and it got much better, but I’m still too far off my best time from the test here in Jerez a few weeks ago. Hopefully tomorrow there is less wind.”

[Press Release] Scott Deroue shows new bike at opening Kartcentre Lelystad

As ambassador of the foundation Against Cancer Scott Deroue and 7 year old Owen Laponder carried out the opening ceremony of the renewed Kartcentre Lelystad. With a number of laps, one in the kart, the other on a bike, they inaugurated the track.

After the two racers were flown in by helicopter and cut the tape, they opened the throttle. Team owner Roelof Waninge didn’t allow Deroue to ride his new Kalex KTM, as the brand new track was still very dirty and the team will be testing in Jerez from Tuesday on. Therefore the machine was shown inside – much safer.

The bike of Deroue has orange accents, the one of his team mate Ana Carrasco has a pink scheme. She will unveil her bike Sunday evening at the Ascari circuit in Ronda.

Deroue will be present all weekend at the Kart fair in Lelystad.

RW Racing Review Jerez Moto3 Test Day 3

RW Racing GP looks back on a total of eight days of testing with satisfaction. After Almeria, Valencia and Jerez the team achieved more or less what it wanted. Ana Carrasco and Scott Deroue finished the three days test in Jerez in 24th and 26th overall, with their fastest lap times set on day 2.  

A cold and misty start of the third day prevented Carrasco and Deroue from getting on their Kalex KTM machines early. But they made up with 53 and 40 laps respectively in the afternoon.

Neither of them managed to improve the lap times set on day 2 – 1.48,155 for Carrasco and 1.48,725 for Deroue – but that was about the only stain. RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen had hoped his riders could squeeze out a few flying laps. “Both Ana and Scott had very reasonable lap times, but no peak results. Perhaps they rode too much, making it a bit of a routine. On the other hand: there was nothing at stake yet. No pressure for a qualifying position, no race result. It’s good enough for now but I do believe both Ana and Scott can go faster.”

The team is on its way to the Netherlands already to get everything ready for the final test in Jerez (11, 12, 13 March) and the start of season. Straight from Jerez the bikes will be flown to Qatar, the United States, Argentina and back to Jerez. “So everything has to done by then”, Janssen explains. “The test in Jerez will be the last one with four races immediately after.”

RW Racing Review Jerez Moto3 Test Day 2

With both Ana Carrasco and Scott Deroue showing substantial improvement, the second day of testing in Jerez was another valuable day for RW Racing GP. Carrasco cut off almost one and a half second and improved her lap time to 1.48,155. Deroue made it to 1.48,725.

Both riders set their fastest lap time of the day in the second session. In the third session neither of the two had much power left to take it to the limit once more. Ana Carrasco ran the considerable amount of 78 laps, 43 of them in the first session.

After 32 laps in the first session Scott Deroue was bothered by a painful groin, a leftover from the crash he had last week in Valencia. Together with his team manager Deroue decided not to force too much, running eight and three laps respectively in the second and third session.

“Ana is working really hard and it pays off: today she was almost a second faster than she has ever been here in Jerez. And I am convinced she can go even faster, close to 1.47,5. Ana is ready to step up to the next level. Scott is happy with the bike and showed he can be fast. I rather have him to take it easy than to be on the bike with too much tension and crash. With the improvement he made today, I think he should be capable of running around 48,0 tomorrow.”

RW Racing Review Jerez Moto3 Test Day 1

The first of three days of testing in Jerez was a good one for RW Racing GP. Only 0,007 separated Scott Deroue and Ana Carrasco, with the rookie taking the advantage over the lady. But actually that wasn’t very important. More important was the fact that both riders ran high quality laps in good conditions and learned a lot from that.

Like most of the teams RW Racing GP only started riding in the afternoon. Wet patches on the track hindered the riders in the morning. The team decided not to go out on rain tyres, but to wait until the circumstances were good enough to go out on slicks.

In the three sessions for Moto3 Ana Carrasco ran 59 laps and Scott Deroue 45. Both set their best lap times in the final session, making it to 20 and 21 overall. Deroue managed to pick up a good slipstream and fought his way to a fast lap time, just a little faster than his team mate.

Jarno Janssen

“One of Scott’s qualities is that he is a pure racer, who is at his best in the middle of the action. He likes to enter into the fray and he is not shy in doing so. When he is fighting for his place in a group, he gets just that bit extra allowing him to go faster. I’m not saying it was a lucky shot, but there was a bit of luck involved. On the other hand: now that Scott knows he can do it, he might do it again on his own. It’s good to get such a confirmation on a first day. Ana was faster all the time except for this one lap. She is not the type of rider to go a second faster all of a sudden. Ana is a bit more reserved, but she is very consistent. In doing so she finds some improvement in every lap, building it up bit by bit.”

RW Racing Review Valencia Moto3 Test Day 2

The second day of the IRTA test in Valencia was much better than the first – in general but also for RW Racing GP. Both Ana Carrasco and Scott Deroue managed to improve their lap times along the day, run a big number of laps and learn a lot about their bikes.

The much warmer conditions allowed the riders to concentrate more on their programmes and test a lot. RW Racing GP too was able to try new settings and adjustments of the bikes, to improve pace and handling. The effects were visible immediately, as Ana Carrasco cut 1,4 seconds of the lap time she set yesterday, and Scott Deroue 1,1 seconds.

During the day both improved further. Carrasco to 1.41,393, Deroue to 1.41,765. The Dutch rookie could have been even faster but he touched the limits in a fast lap in the final afternoon session. It wasn’t a big crash and Deroue was able to move on, but testing was finished, leaving him at 46 laps.

Carrasco ran 77 laps and was especially happy with the morning sessions. She immediately found her rhythm and was able to shift a lot of work. In the afternoon the wind took her out of her rhythm, but the results were still satisfying for both rider and team.

“It was a good day. Too bad Scott crashed in his fast lap. I think there could have been more in it. Luckily it was just a small crash. 25th is satisfactory for now. Ana did a great job as well, but I hope she can improve tomorrow. After all we are not only here to put in the miles, but also to see where we are compared to the rest. The goal for Ana is to get near the top 15.”

RW Racing Review Valencia Moto3 Test day1

With temperatures down to maximum 10 degrees Celsius and a cold, nasty wind RW Racing GP could get all of its to-do-list done. Nonetheless the first day of the official IRTA test in Valencia was not completely lost. Ana Carrasco did around 40 laps, Scott Deroue 42 laps.

Looking at the weather forecast for tomorrow RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen decided it was wiser to narrow down the risk of riders getting hurt and bikes getting damaged. “Next to that we have a restricted amount of tyres we can use over these three days. In these conditions it just doesn’t make sense to make more laps than we did.”

Scott Deroue wasn’t completely fit and complained of head ache. Ana Carrasco didn’t feel comfortable with braking in the corner entries. “It’s better to get everything ready for tomorrow”, Janssen explained. “I prefer Scott to be fit when the conditions are better tomorrow. Last November he was doing laps of 42.0; hopefully tomorrow he can try to get closer to that, when he is fit and the temperatures are less harsh. And for Ana we try to solve the problem with the braking for tomorrow. We’ve got some ideas about that and we want to try some other adjustments as well.”

RW Racing GP raring to go

Just one more night of impatience separates RW Racing GP from its 2014 shakedown. The two Kalex KTM bikes are ready to race and both Ana Carrasco and Scott Deroue are raring to step on. The team will spend two days in Almeria for a private test to get things working properly for the official IRTA test in Valencia next week.

For RW Racing GP the winter has been short. The two days testing in Almeria are therefore very important to get everything running well: getting to know the novelties of the 2014 Kalex KTM, get all the settings right, make the necessary adjustments.

As for Ana Carrasco and Scott Deroue the winter was too long. Both riders are eager to step on their bikes again, get the right feeling with their new bikes. They went out exploring the Almeria track on their scooters already.

RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen: “The first time out after the winter is always exciting. Not just for the riders, for the rest of the team as well. We had some changes, some internal relocations, some new personnel: this is shakedown for the team as well. The 2014 Kalex KTM has quite some changes compared to the 2013 model as well. It has to have track time to get to know every detail so we know what to expect. We will be testing in Almeria on Friday and Saturday but it is not about results and lap times yet. But these two days of getting used to everything and putting in the miles are very important to have everything ready for the IRTA test in Valencia on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.”

#9 Scott Deroue: “I’m really looking forward to getting on the bike. I can hardly wait. But I have to admit I am also a bit nervous. Everything is new to me. I’ve tried the bike once, in the CEV race in Valencia, but that was months ago. I’ve raced in Almeria once as well, so I’m not as familiar to the track as Ana is. I hope I can learn from her. It will be exciting to ride between all these fast guys. I think the pace will be something I will have to get used to most of all.”

#22 Ana Carrasco: “The track in Almeria I know like the back of my hand, but the bike is completely new to me. I’ve raced the KTM last year, which is fairly different to the Kalex KTM. I’ll have to find out what the differences are and how to ride it best. I’m glad we have two days to adapt and get used to everything. But the feeling is good and the atmosphere in the team is nice, so let’s get rolling.”
