Gino Rea Back to Reality at Phillip Island

Gino Rea Phillip Island 2012

After his fantastic first podium in Moto2 at Sepang last weekend it was back to reality for Gino Rea in Australia, the British rider again struggling to find a dry set-up for the Phillip Island circuit.

Gino Rea (21st) “It was a frustrating race because I got a decent start from the line but then lost a few positions in the early corners and even though I felt good on the bike I got stuck behind some slower riders. After that we had some problems with the brakes fading and that meant I couldn't get into the corners as I wanted. It is tough because we have found a good base setting with the data from the race but we need to find this on a Friday. Now it's too late but it is a question of time on the bike. Hopefully we can make better progress at Valencia.”

Fausto Gresini “Unfortunately once again Gino was unable to find a good setting that gave him any confidence in dry conditions here. Unfortunately our visit to Australia has buried the memories of the podium last weekend!”

Gino Rea Heads Phillips Island with A Lot Confidence

Gino Rea Sepang 2012

Gino Rea travels to the penultimate round of the Moto2 World Championship at Phillip Island this weekend in high spirits after scoring a fantastic debut podium in the series at Sepang last Sunday. In wet conditions the British rider charged from 22nd position on the grid to lead the race when the red flags emerged, only for the result to be taken back a lap. Third place, however, was a welcome result and with uncertain weather predicted in Australia this weekend there could be the opportunity for further celebrations 'Down Under'.

Gino Rea
“To come from 22nd on the grid and finish on the podium was an amazing moment for me and I am still buzzing off it. The problems that I have with the bike in the dry are vastly reduced in the wet so I can ride around them and perform to the limit of my potential. Now I want to show that I can do it in the dry too so that is the aim, working alongside the team. We will try our best to find a good setting for the bike in Australia and keep improving right to the end of the season."

Fausto Gresini
“The race at Sepang was exciting but because of our sad memories there I could barely watch it because I was so nervous. Gino did an amazing job and maybe deserved the win although the race was stopped at the right time and we have absolutely no complaints about that. Now I would really like to see him transfer his pace in wet conditions to the dry. He is making great progress and his feeling with the bike is improving so hopefully the result from Sepang can give him the confidence to do well at Phillip Island, a circuit that should be suited to his riding style.”

Maximum Concentration for Gino Rea in Japan

Gino Rea Aragon 2012

After a weekend of highs and lows at Aragon Gino Rea is hoping for the opportunity to show his potential in dry conditions this weekend in Japan. The British rider will be focused from the first session on finding a set-up to tackle the harsh braking and acceleration zones of the tricky Motegi circuit.

Gino Rea “Aragon was a weekend of ups and downs and unfortunately it ended on a down. It was nice to be able to show my potential in the wet conditions but we were unable to transfer that form to the dry because we didn't have the set-up to run with the fastest Suters. I had a lot of chatter in the race and I just couldn't keep my pace up. It would be nice if we had some good weather at Motegi to work on the set-up of the bike because that's what we need. I don't know Motegi at all but I have seen footage of past seasons there and tried to use that to study the layout. There is a lot of hard braking and that should be an advantage for us because it means that chatter should be less of an issue."

Fausto Gresini “We have yet to see Gino fulfil the potential he has shown in practice in a race yet and at Aragon we saw again how fast he can be. Now the moment has arrived where he simply has to make use of practice and turn it into the kind of result that he has the potential to achieve.”

Aragon Presents Fresh Opportunity for Gino Rea

Gino Rea Misano 2012

Gino Rea travels to Spain this weekend hoping that he left the bad luck behind him in Italy. After a weekend that was promising and disappointing in equal measures at Misano the British youngster is keen to make the most of his recent progress at Aragon, a circuit he knows having raced there last year in World Supersport.

Gino Rea “The bad luck at Misano was really out of our hands. The first thing was the tyre in qualifying which left us with lots of work to do in the race. When I got up to the group battling for points, my engine blew. It's a shame because we were fast in the wet with second on Friday and continued to progress in the dry too. I'm looking forward to Aragon. Again, we have things to try at the start of the weekend. They are things I would have liked to have tested first but it wasn't possible, so we will adapt during free practice. The circuit at Aragon is pretty cool, I raced there last year although we used a different version of the last corner. I like the nature of the circuit so I can't wait to get back on my bike. I will be working as hard as possible to bring the team a good result, I believe we can do it so I hope some good luck comes our way."

Fausto Gresini “Things have to turn around for Gino soon. At Misano he showed how fast he is but once again he left without a result to show for it because of a series of problems out of his control. Hopefully he gets the chance to make up for it this weekend at a circuit he already knows.”

Top Twenty Finish for Rea at Indianapolis

Gino Rea Indianapolis 2012

Gino Rea was unable to score points in his first race at Indianapolis but there have been promising signs at the legendary circuit as the British rookie looks to close the gap on the top fifteen. His practice pace and performance in the first half of the race here suggests Rea can be a points contender in the final few races of the season.

Gino Rea (20th) "Good and bad today I think. The good thing is we solved some of the problems we have had all year in terms of the chatter and suspension. Now it's down to developing the bike and setting it up properly. We tried something in the warm-up that wasn't quite the right way so we went back to the qualifying setting and the first eleven or twelve laps I felt I could fight for points. There was a lot of weight on the front on the brakes and I've had a little problem with the tendon in my left shoulder that made things even more difficult. When the grip level went down I couldn't keep the pace up. Hopefully now we can improve the feeling of the bike even more and bring the team the points they deserve. The good thing is I know the next track well so I hope we can start out strong there."

Fausto Gresini "Gino got his confidence and feel for the bike back here this weekend but unfortunately he couldn't manage more than twentieth place in the race. We expected a better result than this."

Significant Progress for Gino Rea

Gino Rea Indianapolis 2012

Gino Rea seems to have finally found his feet in the Moto2 class after taking a significant step forward in the opening day of free practice at Indianapolis today. In both the morning and afternoon sessions the British rider found a good feeling with his bike and hopes are high for continued improvement ahead of tomorrow's qualifying session.

Gino Rea ( 19th 1’ 45” 908)   “I am satisfied today. I had confidence in the bike and I was able to ride it how I want. We have improved the bike and I am sure we can take another step forward tomorrow. I feel confident and I am sure that with more hard work we can obtain a solid qualifying position.”

Fausto Gresini “I am happy to see Rea finally riding with the confidence he needs to push the bike. Now things can only get better and the team will do their best to help him exploit his full potential.”

Gino Rea Targeting Points at Indianapolis

Gino Rea Mugello 2012

Gino Rea returns to action this weekend with the clear target of putting points on the board after a disappointing first half of the Moto2 World Championship. The British youngster has yet to establish himself at Grand Prix level but he is hopeful of proving his quality this weekend as the series resumes following a short summer break at Indianapolis.

Gino Rea
“I really need to push myself to the limit and get a result at Indianapolis. It won't be easy because once again this is another completely new circuit to me but I want and need to score a good finish. I have worked hard to get my physical and mental energy levels up over the break and I am ready for this important challenge.”

Fausto Gresini
“Through a series of unfortunate circumstances Gino has so far been unable to show his true value on the track so it is important that he works hard to do it at Indianapolis. It is another new circuit for him but with the help of the team he should be able to achieve his objective of coming home with a positive result.”

Another Disappointing Race for Gino Rea

Gino Rea Mugello 2012

Another race, another result that provides very little in the way of satisfaction to the team. Gino Rea again struggled to find enough confidence in the bike to push for a points finish and his disappointment is shared by the team.

Gino Rea. (19th) “It has been a difficult day. After the crash in warm-up we went back to yesterday's session. At the beginning of the race the bike felt better but from the middle of the race when the fuel load drops and the tyres wear we lose weight on the front and grip on the side, which makes it is so difficult to change direction and exit the corners. We learnt a lot from this race so we will try to take that forward and with some testing over the summer we can really improve this package.”

Fausto Gresini “There is not much I can say. I am so disappointed and I think some important decisions need to be made because we cannot continue for the rest of the season in this way, without challenging for results.”

Gino Rea Qualifies 25th at Mugello

Gino Rea Mugello 2012

Gino Rea made some progress today at Mugello but was unable to significantly move up the order and secure a good grid position for tomorrow's race. The British rider is hoping to make some improvements with the set-up of his Suter in the morning warm-up before attempting to make up positions in tomorrow afternoon's Italian Grand Prix.

Gino Rea. (25th 1’ 54” 513) “I have improved but not enough to close the gap to the top guys. My confidence with the bike still isn't great and I can't push as much as I'd like. We'll have a look at the data tonight and try to work out if we can find a better feeling for the Suter around this track.”

Fausto Gresini “We're still a long way from being able to say that we're on the right lines and I have to say instead that we are in a position that does not correspond to our team or riders. Hopefully things change overnight so that Gino can have a good race tomorrow.”

Gino Rea Struggles to Get to Grips with Mugello

Gino Rea Mugello 2012

Gino Rea's first day at the long and technical Mugello circuit proved to be a tough one, the British rider finding his way around in the opening session this morning but struggling to make major progress with his lap times. His confidence with the bike improved this afternoon but there is a lot of work to be done from 28th place on the time sheets.

Gino Rea. (28th 1’ 55” 397) “This is such a long and complex circuit it is difficult to learn but I felt more confident in the second session, we changed the bike and it improve. I did a lot of laps in consistent times and we are able to see where we need to improve. Actually doing it is always difficult but it is clear from the telemetry what we are lacking so we will try our best to find it tomorrow.”

Fausto Gresini “I am not happy, that's for sure! To be so far back at our home Grand Prix is embarrassing for us. I am disappointed and unhappy and I we are going to have to find a solution soon because this is not a satisfactory position for us to be in.”

Rea Hoping to Confirm Progress in Mugello Race

Gino Rea Sachsenring 2012

Gino Rea showed that he is making progress with the Suter chassis with an impressive fifth place in qualifying at Sachsenring at the weekend but now the challenge for the British rider is to secure a top race result, with his next opportunity coming within a matter of days at Mugello. It is a circuit the British rider with Italian parentage has yet to visit but he is excited about racing in his family's home Grand Prix for the first time.

Gino Rea “It was nice to qualify fifth but that was in the wet. Unfortunately I couldn't capitalise on the second row start and that's a bit disappointing. There are some positives though, there were corners where I had similar speed as the front runners but a few corners where I was losing a lot of time each lap. We have to improve in our weak areas to finish higher, although making that step is not easy. Like Sachsenring, I haven't raced at Mugello before either so it will be another learning curve. We've now completed three full races on the Suter chassis with the Showa suspension and the bike is improving each time. My lap times were more consistent at Sachsenring but we had to improve in certain areas. If we can do this at Mugello, I hope to be in the points. I really want to reward my team with a strong result. I have been watching last years Mugello race as much as possible and it looks like a long and technical circuit. Because of the long lap, there are many sections to learn so the first sessions will be difficult to be fast. There are many fast corners, long corners and fast changes of direction too so it will be crucial to get a good set up before qualifying."

Fausto Gresini “Gino went really well in practice at Sachsenring but wasn't able to repeat that level of performance in the race. He is very close to taking that final decisive step forward and the team are trying everything to help him. I am convinced that persistence will pay off because there is no shortage of quality. Mugello is a track that should suit his riding style and I am confident that this can be a good weekend for Gino and the Suter.”

Rea Hopes to Rediscover Confidence at Sachsenring

Gino Rea Assen 2012

After another frustrating weekend that showed great promise in practice only to turn to nothing in the race Gino Rea is hoping for a major turnaround in fortunes at Sachsenring this weekend. The British youngster's belief in his potential remains undiminished and he heads directly from Holland to Germany hoping to pick up on the positives at a circuit he will have to learn quickly on Friday.

Gino Rea “Assen was disappointing. We found a good setting for the bike and our pace on used tyres in practice was good but we made some small changes for the race and I couldn't even match my pace. The rear tyre quickly lost consistency and grip. Sachsenring is another new circuit for me and I am interested to see what it is like. We found some positive things at Assen and I want to continue making progress in Germany once I have got my head around the track. So far I have only been round it on the Playstation and it looks like it's short but good fun. I think it will suit my riding style and our bike so I am hoping to reward the team with a good race."

Fausto Gresini “There is an old Italian saying that describes our situation quite well right now: “non sappiamo più quali pesci prendere”. It basically means that we don't know which fish to choose any more. We have tried every possible combination to give Gino the chance to show his potential but so far we have not managed it. The engineers will use the data from Assen and try again at Sachsenring but at the moment it is proving difficult to keep the faith.”

Gino Rea Unable to Start Afresh

Gino Rea Assen 2012

Unfortunately for Gino Rea, even race day at Assen had a disatisfying conclusion. The Moto2 rider could not find confidence with his bike and did not feel comfortable enough to push to the limit. A solution to the problem has been hard to come by all week, and only with this could the British rider be able to recover positions at the Dutch TT.

Gino Rea. (22nd) “It was unfortunately again another disappointing race. It’s frustrating because we have sessions like this morning in which I find confidence and a decent pace, then we never seem to have a comfortable setting for the race. As soon as the fuel light went off I started struggling with the bike and couldn’t turn it. The lack of rear grip later on caused a lot of problems as well. It’s disappointing, because even my pace on the opening handful of laps was not as good as what we did in the warmup with an old tyre. If I’d been able to keep that pace up in the race, then I would have been a lot higher up. The team is working hard and we have to stay positive. ”

Fausto Gresini “There is little that I can say. Unfortunately we still haven’t found what Gino is looking for and the results aren’t coming. I am disappointed and saddened by these recent results, which aren’t reflecting our team’s true potential.”

Difficult Day for Gresini Moto2 with New Suter

Gino Rea Le Mans 2012

Gresini Moto2 team have to start the development again on Le Mans after the were decided to replace Moriwaki to Suter. Fausto Gresini told that the first day of new bike is always difficult, but he sure that the next day will be better.

Gino Rea
“It has been like a shakedown test for us because everything is new and different for me. We need to work hard to make the suspension work with the new chassis, find the right solution for the tyres but for today we improved from the morning to the afternoon and that's important. The goal is to continue to do that tomorrow and continue to move forward.”

Ratthapark Wilairot
I'm happy with the chassis and the bike. I have a good feeling with the front and felt confident today. At the moment I am struggling to get on the gas early enough coming out of the corner without running it wide so this is something we need to work on as well as some other small things but overall I am happy with the change and I think we have a lot of potential to improve."

Gino Rea Happy Gresini Switch to Suter

Gino Rea Estoril 2012

Gresini Moto2 decided to replace Moriwaki to Suter after Estoril GP. Gino Rea, Gresini Moto2 rider, told that he is very happy with Suter. Rea said, "I am very happy that the team has chosen the frame Suter because I am convinced that we can have some positive feedback."

Adapting new bike is not easy for Rea. He told there will be a lot work to do and he will not competitive on Le Mans. "Clearly we will not be competitive straight from Le Mans because it is so much work to do, I will have to adapt to this new bike and we also work towards the Showa suspension. In any case we will have to make progress this weekend. Of course I know this circuit and I'll try to figure out the track but I can not wait to get on track." said Rea.

He continue, "In Jerez and Estoril I had problems with my knee so I did a little 'off the break but then I started training with force. The circuit looks nice I saw on television and tried to learn the paths to the PlayStation also with the fact that you have the new chassis is very motivated so I'm looking forward to run."

Rea Takes Points to Estoril

Gino Rea Jerez 2012

Gino Rea heads for the third round of the Moto2 World Championship at this weekend Estoril having boosted his confidence with a first point of the season last Sunday at Jerez. The British rider made small but important steps forward with the set-up of his Moriwaki in Spain and is now hoping to make significantly more progress in Portugal.

Gino Rea “It's another new track for me to learn so I'll be playing the Playstation as much as possible over the next couple of days! In Jerez we made some progress with the new bike so I'm looking forward to trying it out at a different circuit. It will be another difficult weekend to try and learn the track layout whilst also working on improving the machine but this is the challenge we have signed up for and we are highly determined and motivated to do the job well. I have a great team around me, they are working well and hopefully we can leave Portugal with another solid race behind us like we did at Jerez.”

Fausto Gresini “We took a small step forward at Jerez but it's pretty clear all the Moriwaki riders are struggling at the moment and we have higher hopes than this. Estoril is around the corner and we don't have much time to prepare but we'll be working hard anyway to give Gino the best possible feeling with his bike and try to be more competitive than Jerez.”

Gino Rea First Grand Prix Point

Gino Rea Jerez 2012

Gino Rea picked up his first Grand Prix point today after finishing fifteenth in a Moto2 race of attrition at Jerez. It was an important confidence boost to the British rider following a difficult start to the season and he will get an opportunity to build on it in just seven days time when the Portuguese Grand Prix takes place at Estoril.

Gino Rea
“The race has been the highlight of a tough weekend. I got a good start, I was up to thirteenth and I tried to hang in there as long as I could. Once the fuel load went down I struggled to keep my pace up and had a couple of moments where I almost crashed, like a lot of riders out there. It was a shame they stopped the race when they did actually because I'd just passed Iannone when they showed the red flag so that dropped me back a position. This race was a test for us to try some settings with the new bike and the good thing is that despite limited track time over the course of the weekend we can look back on it now and see that we have made progress. We only have a couple of days until the next round and I am glad because I can't wait to get back out on track.”

Fausto Gresini
“It isn't a brilliant result for us but it was important to get points on the board and we have taken a step forward from Qatar. It is pretty obvious that all the Moriwaki riders are having problems. This kind of result is not what we are aiming for but we have a week until the next race and a lot of hard work ahead to improve our situation.”
